In the original, the goomba thugs were hitting on Goombella, and that's what sparks the conflict.
Other changes include: Everyone knowing the giant dragon Hooktail is a girl right from the start, instead of her gender reveal being a surprise at the end of the game. No misgendering here! And "The Shadow Sirens" being changed to "The Three Shadows." Three guesses where THAT change is going....
Of course, Mrs. Mowz still sexually assaults Mario without his consent. Because it's funny when a man gets kissed by a stranger!
As far as I'm aware, the original Japanese game did seriously hint that Vivian was a man, as far as those shadows can have sexes. Large part of the reason why Beldam was constantly bashing her/him... it. So in an extremely unique case, it seems that if they turned it into a crossdressing man in the remake, it would actually be closer to the original than the game we originally got in English in North America. I'll agree that I would greatly dislike this change, because I prefer Vivian as a woman and especially because there will likely be a leftist troglodyte greatly altering all dialogues about this until the fact that it is a man is constantly bashed into our faces rather than merely slightly hinted at like it should be, but it would still seemingly be closer to the original Japanese game.
From what I've heard, calling Vivian a man was just Beldam being insulting. and the joke is everyone else, including the narration, takes her at her word because they don't know any better.
Either way, the whole thing is stupid and I hate that it's in what is otherwise one of the best games.
Honestly, it's never been clear to me what the original Japanese meant, since I've only read summaries written by other people and can't read the language. I like your interpretation far more than what I wrote above, and hope that's how they'll go about it. But like you said, changing the name of the "Shadow Sirens" isn't a good sign.
I deeply loved TTYD when it first came out, and it's one of my favourite games of all time. I would hate to start resenting aspects of it because of their involvement in degenerate leftist propaganda.
To be fair with The Three Shadows, it is technically more accurate to the Japanese script than the original English localization. Similar to SMRPG, at least some of the script changes look to make things more similar to the original script, such as Hooktail hating "frogs" (Japanese and English remake script) rather than "crickets" (original English script).
Not trying to defend DEI bullshit creeping its way into remakes and remasters, because I have no explanation for the other script changes being made and nowhere near enough knowledge of Japanese to dig through the script.
And here we see, exemplified by perhaps the game with the best writing a Mario game has ever had, why language as an art is dying under the crushing weight of leftist tyranny.
I never played the original one, although I do have a ROM of it already if I ever want to.
Was the original dialogue so childish and condescending? "OoOoh, I get to see the sun! I like to breath clean air! OoOoh!" That sounds like a social media lefty who needs a punch in the face.
I really wish we'd quit making everything so dumb.
This might just be nostalgia talking but I remember the original being one of the funniest games I’d ever played, at least back in the 2000’s when I was a kid and only played console games. All of the characters had a ton of personality, even Mario even though he never spoke.
It's on the long list for eventually, that's why I held on to the ROMs. I'd never heard a bad thing. Honestly, I might have been compelled to get the Switch version, but if they screwed it all up I'd rather have the original dialogue.
All they had to do was make it look prettier and make it work on the Switch. Why waste more money on shitty dialogue? Copy and paste or literally one person typing it in one to one.
Make it look prettier? I played the game like a year ago, it looks totally fine. The original could use a graphics update but even it doesn't look too bad.
I don't understand why anyone wants remakes of games that already look great. For games with graphics that didn't age well I completely understand, but for games that still look great the result of a remake is usually just to make it look polished in the most bland and generic manner possible.
Like the SMRPG remake, they took an old game that still looks great and has an incredible vibe and completely ruined the vibe by remaking it with Pixar-style graphics. Damn near every cartoon game these days tries to emulate Pixar, and no hate towards Pixar, but not everything need to look like fucking Pixar. Once the novelty of "OMG I'm playing a Pixar film!" wears off you're left with something bland.
And if you really wanna remake a game like SMRPG, try a style like claymation (obviously not real claymation, but CGI that approximates it). Or maybe like one of those old voxel games, or like Arcane, etc. There are lots of options to choose from that fit SMRPG's vibe way better than Pixar shit.
I don't understand why anyone wants remakes of games that already look great
90% of the time, its so they don't have to emulate it or get a mod/unofficial patch to fix broken parts (Dark/Demons Souls for example).
Which is a decent reason for at least a port, but a lot of companies are in full hatred of porting their games and think they can double dip harder by remaking it entirely.
Its extremely dumb though, because Nintendo games specifically are so easy to emulate you can do so on release day for their games. So they are the worst ones to want remakes of. At least Xbox has minimal emulation capability and PS2/3 is finnicky, so wanting a port or remake has some ground.
TTYD still looks great but the original could use a remake and SMRPG isn't bad but I can see why they remade it.
If they want to do a remake so bad why not remake the original Legend of Zelda? They could do a Zelda All-Stars similar to the Super Mario All-Stars and have Zelda 1 & 2, LTTP and maybe some of the GameBoy ones to have the 2-D collection. They should also do some remakes of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and maybe Twilight Princess.
Holy fuck, the character "voices" is genuinely the most grating fucking bullshit I've ever heard in my life. I literally do not understand how this got into the final product. Also, why in the fuck is every single floor in the game reflective? It is fucking hideously garish.
Playing story focused games is just insane to me. The stories are all fucking terrible, and now they are all woke as fuck, too. Why would you subject yourself to hours of that trash just to enjoy some actual video game content?
At this point, I play “gameplay forward” games almost exclusively.
I despise modern audiences
Should just rename it to fragile audiences
Communist audiences really.

Yeah isn't the reveal of hooktails gender part of a "darling baby sister" joke during the gloomtail fight?

schkler
And there it is! Fucking knew it! Glad I stuck to emulation the Gamecube version. Hopefully someone ports over the assets.

I don't care how "accurate" it is, calling it "The Third Shadows" is lame as fuck.
And here we see, exemplified by perhaps the game with the best writing a Mario game has ever had, why language as an art is dying under the crushing weight of leftist tyranny.
Turns out hoarding old games is a wise decision.
And thank goodness for emulation.
I never played the original one, although I do have a ROM of it already if I ever want to.

Not even close. The goombas were crass and rude and Goombella sarcastically leads them on before insulting them. It's like night and day.

The original is one of my favorite games ever. They had zero need whatsoever to change any dialogue.
All they had to do was make it look prettier and make it work on the Switch. Why waste more money on shitty dialogue? Copy and paste or literally one person typing it in one to one.

The SMRPG remake really fucked with my muscle memory when it came to timed hits.

I've never played a paper mario, but I think all dialog should be removed from all video games.
Super Metroid did it well. You had the short intro cutscene, but the gameplay was never interrupted after. All exposition occurred through gameplay.
Playing story focused games is just insane to me. The stories are all fucking terrible, and now they are all woke as fuck, too. Why would you subject yourself to hours of that trash just to enjoy some actual video game content?
