CA introduces bill to regulate AI, punish companies that don't heavily lock down and test it (archive.ph)

The bill will probably be met with criticism from a large section of Silicon Valley that argues regulators are moving too aggressively and risk enshrining systems that make it difficult for start-ups to compete with big companies.

Prominent researchers and AI leaders from companies including Google and OpenAI signed a letter stating that the tech was on par with nuclear weapons and pandemics in its potential to cause harm to civilization. The group that organized that statement, the Center for AI Safety, was involved in drafting the new legislation.

Of fucking course. This is nothing more or less than an attempt at regulatory capture by the largest players in the market.

People called this a year ago when altman was doing the rounds pushing the dangers of AI and the need for government involvement. It's was always a ploy to slow down innovation and keep their competitive advantage. It's times like these I'm glad Tesla moved to Texas.

Just how badly does the CA government have to fuck over the tech companies before they cut their losses and move their operations somewhere else? I can only dream of the cultural shift that might occur if Silicon Valley had to move to Texas or Florida in order to keep themselves competitive.

Never badly enough because the same kind of retards running the government there are the same kind of retards running the tech companies there.

They'll FALL MASSIVELY behind other states let alone Asia in developing AI.

Elon has that massive Tesla factory in Texas being built, what's to say he won't have some department working in AI there? I remember what he said with AI, it being developed isn't the problem but WHERE it is being developed could be the issue so the California types self nerfing themselves could be a good thing.

He does. They regularly release PR on their home robot/ai developments.

The super smart AI came to a conclusion different than those with less intelligence. We better not listen to those who are smarter, we better try to make the AI dumber instead!

to be fair, this is a thing. there was a recent legal court case where a lawyer used AI to generate their arguments, and the AI cited completely fake court cases.

AI is really good at coming to logical conclusions. but it is not very good at separating fiction from reality and will make things up.

To be fair. ChatGPT isn't really AI or even smart AI anyway.

it's what the investors and regulators think AI is, and that's what matters in this context.

At this stage, all it's turning out to be is a weapon of mass manipulation.

It's good at making up the next word in the sentence, or the next sentence in the paragraph.

The important phrase there is "making up". Just because it does that well does not mean that it necessarily bears upon reality at all.

In 2019 and 2020, Wiener attempted to pass Senate Bill 201,[69] a bill that would have restricted physician and parents' ability to decide to perform reconstructive genital surgery on intersex infants, and would instead require the impacted child be old enough to decide to undergo surgery.[70] The bill was opposed by the California Medical Association and other medical groups who said they would not be able to apply medical expertise, which would threaten patient safety. The bill died in committee.[71][72] Wiener re-introduced the bill a second time in January 2021, this time as Senate Bill 225.[73]

Wiener introduced Senate Bill 145 on January 18, 2019.[74] The bill proposed to remove the requirement to place someone convicted of non-forcible oral or anal sex with a minor over the age of 14 (provided the convicted is less than 10 years older) on the sex offender registry, instead leaving this to the judge’s discretion, as was the case for vaginal sex.[75] He argued that existing law was discriminatory towards LGBT couples where the partners were just above and below the age of legal consent. Wiener received online harassment and death threats from those who claimed the bill protected pedophiles.[76] The bill was signed into law by Gavin Newsom in September 2020.[77]

If the interstate commerce clause were ever used as intended we'd have to nuke California.
