Goes to prove the only translators they can trust to do their job have to be in-house in Japan, whether that's bilingual staff or AI

Yes at least three regulars commenters, plus a few lurkers that pop up in these threads from time to time. If you're asking whether the subtitles are correct - yes they are somewhat more accurate than the dub, though some nuance is missing. You could translate the phrase to "independent woman", but I'd avoid it because that's a feminist catchphrase that these guys wouldn't use unless they were being sarcastic. I kinda disagree with nichegamer's conclusion too. This isn't another example of localizers gone wild. The dub may be worse but the dialogue is close enough to be evidence of the creeping preemptive feminization we had feared coming out of SEGA Japan.

But at least in the original they told him not to be sexist because it annoys people these days - not that he's wrong.

That's the right answer. There was an article floating around half-kia where they state so

Behind the global success of Japanese video games lies a delicate task: appealing to overseas players whose expectations on issues such as sexism are increasingly influencing the content of major titles.

With the majority of sales for big games now outside Japan, everything from slang words to characters' costumes must be carefully considered for a global audience.

Because woke bullshit offended olympics is the west's most notorious export.

Normal people buy the game if they want it, play it, and hopefully enjoy it.

The danger hair crowd is the one that organizes harassment campaigns and lives on twitter 24/7 to make creators miserable if they fail to cater exclusively to them.

Their definition of "overseas players" always seems to translate to "woke westerners"

It's more like, "Shitbag leftist activists". They are the sole people driving stuff like this.

I'll rubberstamp Assassin47's reading but with even less generosity to NG and Sega. The NG article sucks, honestly. The dialogue hasn't been overly slanted towards an ideology, it's the boomers he's talking to who are regurgitating feminist ideas. Look up tsuranuku ('to go through, to stick with, to maintain') in the dictionary and 'independence' is even one of the things it lists as a value you might be 'maintaining' when you 'tsuranuku' your life (which is the phrase they use). The translation embellishes it a bit, so that they don't actually say the line 'gallop in and save the day', but their implication is exactly that - she's stronk independent wumman so don't tell her you'll make her happy, that's old fashioned.

Not sure how NG can recognise that this scene as 'slightly feminist' while simultaneously suggesting that it's changing the message. The convo's practically a feminist lecture.

This is like that Guilty Gear Bridget thing. It's naive to always assume that the pozz is coming from translators these days, when Japanese devs are increasingly content to insert woke messages all on their own.

... That's it?

Alright, even I'm starting to get tired of some of the arguments. They even said the accurate translations in the article, and they ABSOLUTELY were properly conveyed in the official English script. Complaining about that is just fucking petty, and harms the anti-corruupt-localization standpoint.

I dunno. Localizers suck but these don’t seem like terribly unfaithful interpretations of what the Japanese language said per the article itself. Also, at least in like a dragon, they’re written as super corny old men so it’s not out of character for them to talk this way. The real crime is I had assumed the chick in question was in to nanba the whole time

I'm afraid to see how the karaoke is in the dub, though I'm sure there are a 100 videos I could easily find.

Pretty sure the consensus for 7's karaoke in English is that it is actually great, with the exception of Ichiban's death metal.

Cringe all you'd like, but I'm actually curious what Matt Mercer singing 24-Hour Cinderella would be like.
