Somehow they think it's their job to tailor or curate the information. When even in modern journo school they teach otherwise. Maybe there is some code they all get emailed with the new plan. It's not just Irish hacks, it's the whole West. Somewhere along the way they are fed different instructions. Since it is so uniform, it either comes from the school, or the editors.
Who am I kidding, it's because the same 6-10 people own all of the media outlets. Factual reporters are axed at the first hint of neutrality.

One of the reasons for the first amendment, and why the press is referred to as the fourth estate, is that private journalism is supposed to be another check against the government. We are now in a situation where the executive, the legislative, the judiciary, and the media all conspire against the will of the citizens.
My basic concept of journalism revolves around reporting to people about what the public wants to know or should know about. In that sense, it is a helpful service to provide information towards that conceptual purpose.
In the example here, you could attempt to make an argument that people weren't really interested in getting remarks from a murder victim's boyfriend if it didn't involve, say, seeking revenge. Instead of unhelpful, they might say it's inconsequential.
The media's job is to manufacture consent for whatever the government does.
Helpful, yes, but not for the people. It's for the Owners to distribute the latest batch of brainwashing to the masses. Be it for war or for keeping the target groups from figuring out how they are being fucked lately.
