Liberalism is a mental illness. Liberals are absolutely miserable, deeply unhappy people & this has accelerated greatly in the past 10 years. (media.kotakuinaction2.win)

I believe that social media is playing a large role in the decline of mental health as shown by this polling. From the data it looks like both groups are trending in the wrong direction, with "liberals" (I would call them leftists) more affected. That isn't surprising as liberals are more likely to be young and young people are more likely to use (especially the most pernicious) social media regularly.

Many of the poll questions relate directly to perceived self worth or ability. It isn't hard to see how social media attacks those directly. Just as an example let's say you play a musical instrument. Prior to social media you would likely gauge your proficiency based on your immediate peer group, school, church, or maybe local bands. And that measurement would be against real performances including all of the many takes, foibles, and failures those entail. If you were any good at all you were likely to compare at least a little favorably in those situations and thus derive a sense of self worth and competence from your instrument.

However, the advent of social media has dramatically altered this dynamic. It has blown up our perception of talent and worth. Now, we're constantly exposed to a highlight reel of curated performances, beauty, and success. Social media shows individuals who appear similar to use but seem to effortlessly do whatever we're trying to do infinitely better than we do it.

The curated nature of posts and the exceptional talent routinely displayed distort our understanding of what is truly remarkable and rare. As a result, our perception of what it actually is to be talented or successful at anything is skyrocketing and, by comparison, our view of our own talents or success must diminish. Social media has inadvertently created an environment where we constantly measure ourselves against a distorted reality, leading to feelings of inadequacy and diminished self-esteem.

Yep, and if you broke these charts out by age and sex you'd see that the effect is worst among people who are a) young and b) female, that is, the people most likely to use the worst kinds of social media.

Hell if you sat down with the explicit intention of designing something that would damage the mental health of young women you'd probably come up with something like instagram or tiktok.

If I had a daughter I would never let her anywhere near social media.

This is the real underlying problem. Even without the brain virus modern feed-based social media would still be a profoundly destructive force.

The fact is our brains just aren't equipped to handle being exposed to this much information from all over the world all the time. Even if we consciously understand what we're consuming on subconscious level our brain still thinks it's being given genuine information about the real state of our immediate surroundings.

The original symptom of this disease was people thinking kidnappings and violent crime were skyrocketing when in reality they were just fed 24/7 repeats of the same handful of incidents from across the entire nation.

I think cities and population density play a large role in this as well with left people more likely to live in cities. Cities are shown to produce anti social and generally negative psychological effects in people.

"I feel I do not have much to be proud of"

This one is pretty good. You should not be proud because you exist.

They're not liberals. If they were liberals, they wouldn't be claiming they are qualified to manage your life like they've mismanaged their own.

I recently did some traveling and visited two different cousins' families.

In one family, one had a messy, cluttered house with really expensive computers ($1000+ nVidia GPUs), poorly maintained yard with grass that was mostly gone from their big dogs tearing it up, and grown up into the fence where it was still alive. He's mostly apolitical but basically a "default leftist" through cultural influence. His girlfriend became a theyfriend a couple years ago. Not bad looking, but she has more shit in her face now than she used to. His sister (also my cousin) used to be model-esque in her 20s. Now she is about 150lbs overweight, covered in stupid tattoos, and has a side-shave and short dyed blonde hair. Multiple BLM posters in the windows and an "I stand with Planned Parenthood" sign. Has a husband who is also overweight though he has lost some because he quit drinking, and a daughter that is like 10 years old and shaped roughly like Mr. Potato Head. I could go on about their friends (I think only one was on hormones) but for the sake of brevity I'll just say that more ass whoopings would probably be good for society.

The other family: devout Christian. Gorgeous wife of 28 years (they married at 19). Beautiful lawn. Great house, which he had done many renovation projects on himself. 3 kids, all healthy, energetic, and engaged. Talked with him about movies and he says he rips them and edits the questionable ones for content and language before showing to the kids, and pretty much doesn't show them anything made after 2000 -- though he did let them watch an edited Top Gun: Maverick.

It couldn't have been a more stark difference that perfectly exemplified the two competing philosophies.

I'd go more like a Norman Rockwell painting vs. a kindergartener's drawing hanging on the refrigerator, except that the drawing was done by a committee of adults who think the result is on par with Monet.

Of course. They absorb and repeat 24/7 propaganda about how terrible the world is. Not in the real ways, which are usually their fault, but the fake ways which only exist to control and manipulate them, and which will never get better because the lies are too useful. Horrible, world ending, trans-killing, black-oppressing stuff that could go away if it wasn't for those evil, ignorant conservatives holding us all back.

Oh, and they're nihilists, taught through the course of their lives to despise goodness, beauty, stability and health, and instead worship evil, ugliness, degeneracy, and sickness, so they're deeply confused and incapable of true happiness. They probably couldn't even recognize it, all they allow themselves to know is moment to moment pleasure.

This is a very hard to read graph set. It would add about 40 pixels horizontally to make it very easily legible, and beyond that, fix the issue with half the questions being inversely worded arbitrarily. Bottom-left, in example, showcases the exact opposite point that OP seems to be pushing, as the Liberal side skyrockets upwards on "I'm no good at all", but the graph is reading "disagree" instead of "agree", meaning they're skyrocketing downwards in thinking they're no good at all, but the graph makes it seem like they're getting more depressed, not less.

40 pixels is expensive on the internet, And I know it is popular to hate on anything with a Y in its genetics, but just give every chart their own Y-axis.
