I do agree with some of you, post partum really needs to be looked at harder. I have seen way to many people succumb to mental illness after pregnancy, and no one talks about it. I've had friends watch their wives become a completely different person, and not know what to do. Facing the insanity is something none of us want to do.
My next thought is that this is likely a coping mechanism. The human mind is a weird thing and going through something that traumatic...who's to say how any of us would react and try to cope? The urge to kill yourself must be immense. Making himself her savior is probably all he has to cling to.
