Canada is Americas little brother who hasn't moved out of the house. He hates how well America is doing because it makes him look bad. So, as a way to deal with being the guy living in mums basement, he shows how his successful older brother is really just a jerk. Not all Canadians believe this, but it is a big thing, and promoted by the government a lot.

But the left sees it as a hate symbol, as they now do with the maple leaf flag due to truckers waving it.

I remember in school we always had to sing the national anthem (poorly) and do stupid activities regarding being in Canada but it was always so dumb; you could tell that the adults didn't care so it felt like an arbitrary punishment.
Now it actually means something. Waving the flag in public or putting it on your car is risking a confrontation or vandalism but that's because it shows who in this country actually hates Canada. The flag now means freedom from arbitrary government bullshit (the very same shit the schools used to pull) and I'm proud to wave it.
