What on God's Green Earth is a "Progressive Conservative" supposed to be?

The conservative part means that you promise to repeal a grooming 'sex education' law written by a pedophile, but then the progressive part kicks in and you retain it.

It's what came out of a schism on the Right about 30 years ago, when Preston Manning and his Reform Party (not to be confused with the American version) caused a vote-split, and then the whole thing collapsed and the Conservative Party rebranded itself as Reform refugees joined. The whole thing was about reforming the Senate, which never happened.

Manning and the Reform party were at the federal level though in the 1990s.

The Progressive Conservative brand existed at the Ontario provincial and federal levels prior to Preston Manning.

It's harder to label the current Doug Ford version of the party, as they have very little set ideology other than cronyism.

The last successful iteration of the brand existed with Mike Harris in the 1990s who branded themselves as fiscal conservatives willing to cut welfare payouts, fight teachers' unions and force changes to the governance structures of municipalities below them.

They survived for two terms but then got old and corrupt like all governments, then spent a good 15 years in the penalty box while the populace switched over to Liberal corruption for term after term.

Here's my thoughts: seems like people tend to be loyal to parties rather than candidates or policies. Ford doesn't have a very good reputation but I imagine most people thought that the opposition wasn't any better.

I was expecting the The New Blue Party to at least win the seat for their leader (Jim Karahalios), but I thought wrong. I guess that I drastically overestimate the significance of lawn signs; New Blue voters just tend to be more vocal and passionate (and even more knowledgeable) about politics than the average joe - but this translates very little to the overall vote.

My understanding was that voter turnout was pretty terrible.

People don't want Ford, but they don't want any of the alternatives. They lack the courage to go outside the status quo (a hallmark, and prerequisite, of the pandemic as a whole). They aren't even bothering to show up to decline or spoil their ballot. I think there is a general loss of faith in our electoral systems.

Or someone hacked the polling computers, there were running Windows...

This.

Ford sucks but it's become a choice between

More Lockdowns - definitely yes

And

No more lockdowns (maybe)

PPC, New blue etc are really good but they aren't gaining momentum and the priority is keeping the left out.

How on earth are they advocating for lockdowns at this point? Corona is basically over everywhere else.

Have you seen the people running the federal government? The other "big" provincial parties are more of that. NDP and Liberals wanted to reimpose mask mandates and said they would lock shit down again on a whim. They also wanted to enforce vaccine requirements again.

This whole country is full of faggotry.

We have faggots who are at least as bad in Europe, but there is not a whiff of that sort of thing. And if they did impose it, people would simply not obey (except perhaps in Germany).

Traditionally, Canadian protest votes amount to voting for some shitty little weird joke party that no one expects for to get any seats, like the Rhinos, or Natural Law. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be (m)any around lately.

thought that the opposition wasn't any better.

I know how bad american leftists are.

Canadian leftists are going to be even worse and more unhinged.

Ford is still garbage, but I can empathize with not wanting something even worse.

At this point voting in western nations boils down to "I have to vote for this candidate because he's slightly less evil than the guy who is openly calling for my death".

Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca says he will step down as leader of his party following tonight’s electoral defeat.

This was the guy who wanted to mandate vaccines to attend public school, right? Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Wow, that is crazy. I keep being surprised by how bad vaccine extremism is in North America.
