The police in many places have crossed the point of deserving any respect or support. They have to stand up to their bosses/politicians or they are the enemy of the people.
police enforce the will of those in power, those that pay them. They are mercenaries. The ones that were good quit. All that is left are guys trying to feed their families and who do not care what the cost to others is. Fuck em, mercs got to get paid. Cracking the skulls of a few herd animals is just the job.
This is the end result of forcing hundreds of resignations from the local cops. If you send your kids to the same schools and go to the same Christmas parties and celebrate 4th of July together as the people you protect, you see them as your peers. Your boss tells you to hose down your peers, you say up yours. Instead, they choked out the good people who read "Protect and serve" to mean protect the people and serve the people, and replaced them with those who have zero connection, who will Protect the interests and Serve the interests.
So now if you want to defend yourself, you have to hurt an innocent animal. Lose/lose.
It's not an innocent animal when in police custody, it is a weapon.
It's worse. Even when I'm on the pro-cop side of the fence, I hate the legal concept that fighting a trained attack dog is automatically the same as attacking a cop. A dog is a beast, and it filters its handler's understanding of the law and acceptable use of force through a creature that possesses neither.
If you were to stab the dog to make it stop, I bet the corrupt cops will use it as an excuse to shoot you.
People should be comming to these protests armed to fight these corrupt bastards.

Not killing it, but certainly… I wouldn’t feel so bad about possibly injuring it, if it got the damn thing off me and/or my friends and colleagues…

The optics, though, if you do?? Yeah, they’re bad. That’s partly why the fucking cops use horses, for “crowd control”, too…
So the media can demonize people who “resist”, or “fight back”… 😑
And why the left uses kids like Greta Thunberg or people who check all the diversity boxes to push their messaging. Gotta make sure that if you fight back it looks as bad as possible.

Here in the west we understand that whipping a camel doesn't get the same effect as proper training, after thousands and thousands of years of breeding we've gotten attached to the fruits of our labor, as opposed to the kind of people who walk up, see the work of European hard work, and don't get it.
You misunderstand the role of a pet.
A pet is an extension of its owner.
A pet is not innocent if the owner is not innocent.
It would be quite infuriating if someone were to get mauled during a protest as a result.
That being said, dog repellent works wonders. Pepper spray works in a pinch, too.
