Church=bad. You could remove the church and religious part entirely and it still works.

He seems pretty level headed so for the life of me I can't figure out why he decided to run. I half think he was goaded in to it to harm his chances at being re-elected governor.

People are pissed at Florida for being a sane state but with the massive influx of people fleeing insane states it would not take much to push it blue. Doesn't matter who the Dems run if they get in there they will repeal fucking everything day 1.

Funny thing, in the book the Poe character, the hotel itself, is Jimi Hendrix.

Edit to add: Yeah, the way that world works it's really prime for race or gender swapping. It's a theme in the books.

Heavily second the Lensman series and The Forever War

I really liked Neuromancer and Gibson's Sprawl trilogy. His recent stuff is basically navel gazing, weird borderline stream of conscious thought experiment stuff. I wouldn't call anything Gibson did as "military sci-fi," though. He did flee to Canada to get out of the Vietnam draft.

Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan is pretty good. It's also part of a trilogy but each book gets worse. The first one, and maybe the second are worth a read, the third isn't.

I'm in IT. Early on in my career I would hear guys "joking" about just up and quitting to work on a farm. It did not take me very long to realize it wasn't a joke.

I don't fully agree with Uncle Ted, but damn

Ha! That clip reminds me of this one.

Interesting thing about watermelons is that western Europeans associated them with foreigners because people from Turkey and the Middle East would grow them in Europe because they were used to growing them back home. You can grow them a literal desert.

As a Southern man I can say the love of chicken, watermelon, assorted greens, and beans transcends race. I think the only people who see this as a purely black stereotype are those damn yankees.

In your story with a white northern European woman playing Shaka Zulu maybe have a bit part where some black women Vikings get lost and end up on the eastern shores of Africa.

I'm sure the absolute absurdity would be lost on some people but there is so much room for comedy there.

I went in to Redo of Healer knowing absolutely nothing about it. It surprised the hell out of me but I liked it. No way in hell anything similar would be made in the west today.

That's awesome to hear. I am looking to put a well on my property and figure I could run the pump through solar, rather than digging up my garden to run a line. And like MLGS mentioned I was going to put a deep cycle marine battery in and use solar to keep it charged. As of now my only plans are to run radios during power outrages and the pump but it seems like I can really expand on that.

Are there really grit purists that frown on putting hot sauce on grits? That sounds more absurd than the Chicago folks who say you can't put ketchup on a hot dog.

If so, I will never repent and remain a heretic forever.

I've got an odd habit of storing my tannerite in stuffed dogs, near doors.

I've heard Miami being called the capital of the entirety of South America. It's a wild city.

Hey, I know this is late but I had meant to ask:

I knew he was from the PNW. I can't figure if he was from Oregon or Washington. That doesn't seem like a big deal to me, considering those rural areas are similar (let me know if I am wrong.)

Is there any reason he would want to lie about his school? I know he was an alcoholic and maybe wanted to cover up his identity at the time.

Either way, I dig his stuff.

I'm sure some idiots on twitter were. I'm kind of surprised The Prodigy would do this but, eh, UK group. Maybe trying to get ahead of hate speech laws?

I wasn't an accelerationist because I figured people would eventually, and soon, take direct action given the current goings on. This could be carried out by the three boxes, any and all of them acceptable to me.

Given this hasn't happened, especially considering the state of western Europe, makes me wonder how terrible things have to get before any action is taken.

I still think things can turn around but if we have to go through another 1930's and WW3 to get people to wake up, we are fucked. Muslims have something the west sorely lack and that is zealotry. For their state or particular brand of Islam, either which way, they will kill and die for it.

Also, sharp guy. Never really hear about him, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. Take that as you will.

Frank James?

The black nationalist and sovereign citizen movements have a very large overlap.

It's actually pretty sad to me. I can understand the sovereign citizen movement but the people caught up in being arrested are, for lack of a better word, retarded.

They know just enough that they hurt themselves. No, you aren't wrong in saying the things being asked of you is un-Constitutional. Yes, you still have to comply.

It's a truly wild movement.

This is the second time I've seen someone mention a phase talent here, both within 24hrs lol. I knew I would get found out eventually but you guys are pretty open about it. I knew I was in good company.

Darrell E. Brooks Jr., the Wisconsin guy, is one of those sovereign citizens types. As such, he elected to represent himself at his trial. The trial was recorded and I think broadcast live. Brooks, in classic sovereign citizen form, would have frequent outbursts and make absolutely non-sensical statements. One of which was shouting "On what grounz?"

It's all really easy to find if you are curious.

I do the reserve and pick up thing but my library also has a really good music section so I'll take my time and check out the CDs. You aren't wrong, it is an older and much younger crowd in general, but I do find people in my generation browsing books and what not.

Since you sound like you don't mind getting outside: libraries. I've ranted about librarians before. but the people you meet there are usually decent.

Very easy to shift to "let's grab a coffee" "What are you reading?" "I don't know that author, tell me more"

pippa is my oshi. There, I said it, it is done.

Anyhow, I was going to post late 90s/early aughts commercials and have a game of spot the difference with regards to modern stuff.

It's genuinely surreal. The thing is I only see TV when I visit family, like on Thanksgiving, so I have no idea what is normal or what has been normalized in the last decade or so.
