Well, if the parents were simply present, then I don't think they'd have much of a job to do. A lot of kids don't turn out bad because they have bad parents, but because they don't have any parents.

Kids learn more by what they observe than what they are explicitly told.

So, parents don't have to tell their kids "those games are just pretend", they just need to not act violently in real life to get the message across.

I think the truth is more nuanced and the way people describe something is just a more colloquial or general way of if phrasing it.
