... the fact that people treat it as such is why we get retarded policies like ICE vehicle bans by 2030.

I blame political lobbying. Holy fuck, how does anyone think that hydrogen is clean? Tell me you are brutally, willfully ignorant without telling me you are a window-licking moron.

Is horribly underreported how worse the ev batteries become after 5 years.

That is because there is so much variability. The software of the battery power electronics is paramount to battery lifespan.

That is, how fast and deeply you discharge your battery and the way you charge your battery both dramatically effect lifespan.

It turns out that active cooling (liquid cooling systems and radiators) are vital to both fast charging and battery pack lifespan. See the early Nissan Leaf that had battery packs without active cooling systems. The battery had a truly disappointing lifespan. Now Nissan doesn't make them like that.

That said, it would be a relatively simple matter for the manufacturer to build a diesel heater into the battery cooling system. That would keep the battery warm in low temperatures. Even electric heating driven from the charging circuit (an electric blanket) that ran while the car was plugged in would be a good start.

It amuses me to think about people pouring diesel or kerosene into their electric car to keep it warm. It would solve a bunch of problems, as making heat out of electricity is really inefficient, so passenger cab heating, windscreen defrosting etc takes a huge toll on the battery and thus the range.

IMNHO, EVs are just an under-baked idea. They will get dramatically better as these problems come to light and are solved.

tl;dr: It is just about impossible to do an apples to apples comparison across EV brands or even models.

Solar panels have a effective lifespan of about 25 years. It used to be 20 years, but the newer Chinese panels last even longer.

If the frames are built well and there is quality wiring, you can just replace the panels and get another 25 years.

You may want to add more panels or replace them early, because performance degrades slowly over time. At 20 or 25 years (depending on where you draw the line) they are no longer economical.

As for Lithium Ion battery packs. That is a legitimate concern. Depending on environment, cooling, charge discharge cycles and how full you charge the battery for maximum charge ... you could get between six and ten years out of your battery pack. Less if you regularly charge them really full and discharge the battery completely; that is long distance driving. Don't do that.

Replacement costs of a battery pack for a six or ten year old tesla is more than the resale value of the car.

If you can get your fuel for free (simplest is if you charge at work) then it might still be a worthwhile trade.

I have a friend who has an EV. His wife also has an EV. Both of them charge for free at work. Both drive less than 40 km a day, on average. It works out very well for them. Free fuel, no mechanical services required. There vehicles will just cost them tires and washing until they sell them.

EVs are not for every case, but for their niche they can be outstanding.

I'll bet you a shiny dollar that by the time you get around to your EV + Solar Panels you will not be able to afford insurance for any vehicle with a Lithium Ion battery pack.

I don't think that the insurance industry is going to be smart enough to figure out that LiFe battery chemistry neatly solves the issues thermal runaway and fire.

Tell me about it! I worked with a company that ... lets say they made superior spanners. Like, really awesome, totally better than the best spanners. Wrenches for you yanks.

On two separate occasions the (Aussie) DOD turned up and asked: "Hey, can you build ROCKETS with those spanners?"

Company: "Well, yes you can. These awesome spanners can build the shit out of any rocket you like."

DOD: "So, we should declare that these spanners are of military significance! And as part of a ROCKETRY PROGRAM they should be on the RESTRICTED EXPORT LIST! In fact we should declare them CLASSIFIED!!!11!! eleven!"

At which point some frantic conversations took place to cause the DOD to step back from the edge. Such a declaration would absolutely destroy the spanner company. Even though spanners are basic tools that could be used to build literally anything at all.

Actual rocketry programs, satellites or any details pertaining to them are all of military value. You could strap a rocket motor, precision guidance and a heat shield to a simple bowling ball and have a precision inter-continental weapon with first strike capability. If your guidance is good enough, you can use it for single target assassination anywhere on earth.

If the CIA is put under executive control, then that control will be handed to whoever replaces Trump.

That sounds like a terrible idea.

Even if you were dead set on tearing down the institutions that hold up a nation by executing people, a list is still important.

You have to kill them in the right order. The CIA proved this by giving such lists to Saddam Husain in his rise to power.

Sure! But when no one watches this year, it will be because we are all racist!

This is a perfect solution! Without changing the awards show or improving the quality of TV series there is now a reason for why no one watches the Emmys. It turns out it was our fault all along. You racist fuck!

D&D Jumped the shark at 4th Edition. 5th doesn't quite suck as hard, but it is still a narrow take on the heroes journey.

In reality D&D rules are made to tell a story about killing things and taking their stuff from 1st to 12 level. That is it.

If you want to play some other kind of game that revolves around court intrigue, assassination attempts, solving a mystery or some such ... don't play D&D.

I recommend Reign by Greg Stolze.

https://gregstolze.com/reign1/

Available as PDF, it scales better than D&D and is capable of more stories than just "I attack the goblins! How much loot do they have?!"

Every single female fighter pilot would not be in even the top 100 candidates for her spot.

That is, if she can do it well enough, then 99 men can do it better. Not to say that she might be a bad pilot or a danger; she just wasn't selected by merit.

Not only that, I'd love to see the stats on how many of the female fighter jocks leave to have a baby and never come back. Fighter pilot is massively training intensive profession. Every hours in the cockpit of a fighter jet costs tens of thousands of dollars. For her to pack up and leave at 27 because she wants a family robs the military of almost all of the return from that training.

This problem isn't unique to fighter jocks. It is also a problem with engineers, surgeons, specialist doctors etc. For a company just looking for return on investment on training and development, the more training a job requires the dumber it is to put that money into a young woman.

Perhaps at least as important is that these high training, high profile careers at the expense of a family are not making women happy. Many career women who sacrificed a family in their 20s (which is forever if we are honest) deeply regret their choices at 40 or 50.

Venture Capital Investment, in general, destroys the value of a company.

The VC model, more or less, goes like this:

  • Identify a company with explosive growth potential
  • Buy in on the ground floor to gain a big slice of equity at a low price
  • The company uses that investment money to improve their market position
  • The company is sold to a huge company for the cost of the VC investment plus a whole lot, which gives the VC company excellent returns

In reality, VC needs to achieve returns that are better than other, comparable investments. While there are inconsistencies in the market, a simple indexed fund can make about 10% year on year with (relatively) low risk and (relatively) low cost.

So it follows that VC needs an investment to make better than 10% year on year. Few companies can make anything like this as sustained growth. Moreover, the longer the investment continues before a sale the more money the VC requires to meet their target.

There are really only a few big companies who have the kind of funds to splash around on new technology acquisitions. If you can't catch the attention of Google, Microsoft, GM or the like, then a high value sale is very unlikely.

With a bit of thought, we can see that the business model of a company that has received a large VC investment is totally different to another company in the field. VC company isn't focused on good service, steady growth or customer satisfaction; they need the company to grow quickly and be very attractive for a buyout. Their product is actually the company itself, and the market is potential investors, not whatever widgets or services they sell to the public.

The reality is that VC adds a huge expense to any potential company sale. VC puts enormous pressure on the company to sell out in two or five years. There is huge, cutthroat competition to sell to the tech giants or industry leaders.

Profitable startups that have received VC investment and then gone on to sale and success, more or less, originate with YCombinator and nowhere else. Even then, almost all YCombinator alumni have been zombie companies. That is, companies that subsist on VC investment but do not have a successful business model.

If it interests you, I can discuss why VC almost universally makes shitty investments.

Examples of YCombinator Zombie Companies include Reddit and Twitch. In fact, almost everything on the top 50 list of YCombinator companies is a Zombie company. Perhaps AirBnB is profitable now? They were having huge issues with insurance, but that might be solved.

I'm happy to discuss this more if anyone cares. I spent literally a year of my life learning about VC investment and how to chase it before deciding it was mostly shit.

tldr: Venture Capital Investment is a shitty business model. Bankers and accountants, who know nothing about the technical risks of a venture, invest vast amounts of money chasing one-in-a-million long-shot because Facebook did it once. Almost all VC money is invested badly and written off as a loss.

It drives me bananas. So many sites have the title in Japanese without translation. I get that they want to be specific, but I don't speak Japanese.

I can't remember a title I have to learn phonetically.

"Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon" is memorable. "Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka" is not.

I mean, the Palestinian flag is tacit support for Hamas and genocide, but the Soviet Union killed about a hundred million people.

What the fuck does she think capitalisms is?

Have you asked her? Does she even know?

Capitalism, the term, was invented by Marx. Is she honestly a Marxist who thinks that child trafficking will end if we are all good little socialists?

Ask her: "If you Marxists are content with letting thousands of kids get raped every night to bring about the Workers' Revolutions, what will you do to stay in power?"

Neo Marxists are unironically evil. Calling her one of Stalin's Useful Idiot's is too kind.

Astro Boy was the English Language name for Tetsuwan Atom. I grew up with the 1980s (color) remake of the original 1963 version.

It is very much for children, and it was my introduction to Japanese Animation, and it was wonderful.

You are probably a bit old for it, but you really did miss out.

I can recommend Patlabor. It is an interesting character study which is full of human motivations and politics pretending to be a giant robot show.

The robots are cool, that just isn't the focus of the show.
