He was an officer and always got annoyed by a decent chunk of the women under his command because an annoying amount liked to get pregnant right before shipping out. When it came to the heavy lifting or working with things that could seriously hurt someone men would often have to pickup the slack, too. One can see how that's a hazard if you're working with a chain or something else under a lot of tension while you're at sea, to give an example.
