I also favour shutting down prisons. they're too expensive. the whole concept of prisons is warped. the idea that horrible criminals will be out one day after being cared for by the state. ridiculous. generally criminals should be quickly executed, along with drug addicts, vagrants, illegal migrants, and so on. for crimes where prison time is substantial and where punishment goes much beyond a fine it should generally be dealt with by immediate execution
Yep, imagine how much better society was when violent criminal vermin would be put down instead of being housed, fed and clothed for YEARS only to be released and then go out killing again
I always liked the idea of "Work will set you free".
Prisoners should be used as slave labour to manually clean rivers and parks. The fundamental failure in these people is Pride; they think their own immediate needs outweight everyone around them. They need to be taught how to think in a civilised manner, and all civilization begins with slavery. None of them should be released without demonstrating that they can live around civilised humans; none of this time-based sentence garbage.
Violent criminals? Yeah, we don't need to try to "rehabilitate" them. If it's a one off thing that will never realistically happen again (ie murdering your daughter's rapist) then they should be released after an assessment indicating such. But petty thugs, even teens, don't change their spots.

I would say killing, not murdering, for your example in the last paragraph. A killing is something that can be justified, whereas murder cannot otherwise it wouldn't be murder. Frankly anyone who does your example there should be given some kind of commendation after the investigation clears them of wrongdoing.
Of course this assumes the authorities doing the investigating, since I still think there should be one to make sure there's no BS going on in all cases, are on the up and up.

Time does lower crime rates for most demographics. The older they get the less crime is likely... mostly.
So stashing a "teen" for 10 years could be the only way to "rehabilitate" them.
And for lesser criminals, we need to bring back exile and corperal punishment.
It might begin to happen but it won't be the government doing it. Community justice only stopped because law enforcement made it redundant. The way things are going, a comeback wouldn't surprise anybody.

More prisons should be shut down. There are too many people that simply put should be executed because they've been allowed to be violent menaces against society for years. I also think more asylums should be opened up because many people are also a danger to themselves and others around them. I can't go downtown in my own city because there's a bunch of obviously drugged out homeless with serious mental issues that a polite Christian society should have in mental asylums where the the general population is kept safe, our cities restored, these mentally ill can be treated/isolated and protected by the state in a way that greatly benefits society. Asylums only got a bad rep because of a few corrupt leaders turning them into personal fiefdoms while the state threw too many violent offenders into the asylum system that should have been facing capital punishment.

Prisons are in fact ridiculous. We should turn Africa into a deportation zone for all criminals. No matter the crime, if you go to prison you get deported to Africa and aren't allowed back into the country until after your sentence. Your survival then depends entirely on you.
Murder or corruption by a government official should lead to execution though.
