So the upsides are worth it.

Jean Claude Van Damme is lean muscular and has always had a sense of humor about him, winking at the female audience when they swoon when he stretches or takes his shirt off (younger van damme obviously). Same with Arnold. Due to age he's not the hulking monster he used to be. He's lost a lot of muscle due to age. But Arnold still retains the masculine strength personality. The rock even at a smaller size could still embrace that brand that is "the rock". I mean in his wrestling career early on, he was semi soft and doughy looking (muscular fat) but still had the rock attitude.
He doesn't need to be huge. Scorpion king era rock is when he looked the most like an action hero. Roided out rock didn't look good in my opinion. As for Stallone, I know some people will throw Tango & Cash in there folliowing Rambo 3, and Stallone looked great in that, but he wasn't a "body guy" in that film, and played more the straight man to Kurt Russell's loose cannon.
If memory serves, I think Stallone wanted Jackie Chan for that end fight in the third act against a martial arts henchman? But Chan declined (which seemed to be a recurring theme between Stallone and Chan over the course of 30 years). It was still a martial arts fight, and Stallone looked decent in that fight and was still pretty quick on his feet, but it's such a shame he never really made use of his physical talents the way he should have during that five year period.
