It IS socialism. Companies and business groups didn't stop existing in the Soviet Union they just became clients of the government. In effect you were born into lifelong debt to the grim machine. You lived and died without any purpose save to service the machine.

Socialism declares that The Workers (i.e. The Party) seize the Means of Production (i.e. The Workers' Hands).
Making use of your skills and selling it for money would be The Black Market, which undermines the authority of the party.
The Party Officials become a de facto aristocrat class, because they are the officials that assign the resource allocation.
Merit no longer becomes effective in securing promotion. Only a person ingratiating themselves to party officials (politics) will cause advancement.
At which point real world results mean nothing and the Feelings of Party Officials are all powerful.

It's getting off topic, but some of the stories out of the Soviet OKBs are enlightening in this regard. Meet the State's unreasonable demands or you'll be scapegoated as a "wrecker" and either shipped off to a slave labour camp or executed outright.
I've seen some of these on youtube they are insidious.
They get around max rate laws by offering 0% rate but with a "processing fee" that gets immediately deducted from the loan amount and equates to massive interest in and of itself. Then they ask for a "tip", a tiny fraction of which gets donated to charity. Missing a payment makes things far worse and people end up in debt to multiple of them at the same time. No credit check!
I don't know how people who come up with this shit can possibly live with themselves.
Reminds me of when I read my water bill. They charge for water usage and waste disposal, then they nickel and dime me six or seven ways with garbage like a maintenance fee, city fee, zone fee, disposal fee, environmental fee...
I am in the same boat, fees and taxes jack my minimal water & sewage bill up to $90+ a month.
Public works has been a traditional vehicle for graft and corruption for millennia. Hell, it is a near certainty that someone was grafting off the construction of the pyramids in ancient Egypt.
Then they promote water conservation.
Followed by raising sanitation water levies when water usage rates go down.
Every system will eventually become corrupt if humans are involved even in a horizon zero dawn event the new humans would also become corrupt if they govern themself. Thats why there are books/movies like Logans run with dystopian society ideas, where people got euthanized at age 20-25 or something like that. Even if you had robots doing all the shit labor and eveything worked, humans would eventually become bored or unsatisfied. Thats why we got movies like the matrix, where people were "allowed" to rebel but constantly got wiped out again. But even that could have been a simulation in a simulation.

Was listening to Tucker Carlson's response video to Ben Shapiro's smear job.
Carlson specifically used a line of attack where he argued that Maduro in Venezuela wasn't an overt communist, that he has some more socially conservative policies compared to the fake & ghey West (bans on abortion & pornography).
Carlson played a clip of Shapiro calling Maduro a communist. Then someone points out to Ben that Maduro is openly against LGBT tranny BS, where Shapiro claims he "doesn't care".
Tucker mocked Shapiro that he should "care" about leftists mutilating children. They Carlson changed his angle of attack that Shapiro should care about usury in the US with payday loans charging 300% annual interest to desperate citizens.
It was obvious that Tucker was taking a veiled "antisemitic" critique towards Shapiro. But it was also really strange that Carlson started criticizing Ben and payday loan interest without a segue when he was initially focused on Venezuela.
Do 100% of businesses need to register with the government, follow a massive set of rules that they dictate about the business operations, then pay a portion of the business proceeds to the government while the gov is completely free of any risk of any kind? Sounds like the gov owns the business, not the poor sap who funds it.
I saw it when I read various plans Walmart had for the future. They're both giant bureaucracy ridden places that want more power. Socialism is just the disguise of that power reach.
