I was just discussing the Steamdeck with a coworker. We now have a console, head gear and new controller to go with it. If priced right, it becomes major competition for consoles.

MiniPCs are becoming impressive gaming machines for just a couple hundred bucks, while still being fully functional computers/media centers/etc - when valve came out with Steam Machines a while back, it seems they were just slightly ahead of the curve on these things, so it’s good to see they’re coming back to the idea now that you’re able to get so much more for your money compared to just a few years ago with these System On Chip setups
Combined with SteamOS, if they pull this off they could easily seal their control over PC gaming for the next 10 years
Can you mod games the same way you would on PC?
Definitely, these things are real computers in every way
Steam already has a few mods to download straight away.
I wish every game they sold had workshop integration. An annoying amount still make you go off-platform to hunt for the mods then spend a ton of time dicking around trying to get em working
I wouldn't mind off platform so much if nexus weren't such intolerable busybody faggots these days.
That would be great. Just getting them on the same system is great for me. I think I say this because my favorite mods are offered
It is a PC, so yes. Comes by default with Linux (SteamOS), but nothing would stop you from installing Windows on it.
As consoles become shitty PCs, PCs now become consoles. What is this bizarro world we inhabit?
I'm a little disappointed that their new VR "Frame" is following the meta quest so closely by being the standalone device with optional tethering. I'd rather just have a streamlined display+motion-tracking device without useless mediocre processing power included by default. I don't need it, I'm not playing that shit on the go, I'll only be doing the stupid blind flailing in the privacy of my own home next to my beefy desktop, thank you very much.
I'm glad they finally pulled their finger out on the wireless connection at long last though.
Since I design, the stand alone VR kit connected to a bunch of other stuff is part of my plans.
I want more hardware specifications and less marketing
What CPU is this "next gen steam machine" is going to use?
https://youtu.be/bWUxObt1efQ?t=347
AMD Zen 4 6 core 4.8 GHz
AMD RDNA3 28 CU, 2.45GHz equivalent to an RX 7600
16GB DDR5 + 8GB VRAM
Ah GN, all the best people have feds fucking with them.
So its a desktop? I kinda wanted a mobile steam deck with those specs
It's more like a desktop console hybrid.
Who even asked for such a thing?
Like prebuilt already exists for decades...
Valve sees the writing on the wall... if they don't start controlling the hardware, pretty soon they won't be allowed on any OS. M$, and Google are all trying to close off all their OSes like Apple already has. There is a ongoing coordinated attack on Valve because they are fair to consumers, unlike virtually any other company.
Store page has spec sheet. CPU is around Ryzen 7640U and GPU is a slightly cutdown Radeon 7600. Underpowered for most people already in PC gaming, but could be a great entry point at the right price.
I don't see myself buying a steam machine. Maybe if it was very cheap or something.
I do love my steamdeck
The price really is critical for it. Underpowered hardware isn't inherently an issue unless it is overpriced. I just need SteamOS standalone + 4x controllers as my TV PC already beats the Steam Machine.
I love retro gaming so the idea of getting a low power mini PC to use as an emulation engine has always been compelling. If the GabeCube has a good price point, it'll be an easy buy for me.
I love that new name.
The mini-PC /console has :
16GB RAM that's still ''fine'' for now.
But 8GB VRAM ; demanding games today already exceed that amount of VRAM ( the excess has to be stored in slower RAM, lowering FPS, causing stutering or textures not loading fast enough, or game might not work at all ).
Don't expect miracles, but if optimized right and at low price with good build quality, it could be interesting.
And if you plan to use this as your PC replacement or have many games installed at once, ignore the 512GB version. 2TB option is fine.
They ( Valve/Steamdeck ) have a good track record for repairability, let's see in 2026 if you can do something like change the storage drive easily.
And people will somehow still buy Xbox
