After that post about the misandrist dogshit Takemine show, I'm curious if there are any other anime people here actually are excited for this season.
Still pretty early season, but right now I'm watching Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive, Shiunji Family, Summer Pockets, Witch Watch, Country Bumpkin Swordmaster, Makina-san, and Brilliant Healer's New Life. If you can't tell, I'm pretty much a sucker for low drama romances. I think I've aged out of repetitive shonen slop, and the grimdark edgelord stuff is just a little too insufferable for me.
Kowloon Generic Romance is ridiculously promising, from the one episode I've seen. Gorgeous retro art and aesthetic, and an intriguing story so far. Bonus points for taking place in Kowloon Walled City. I just hope it doesn't turn into reverse harem; I saw a trailer that made me a little nervous.
You already mentioned Brilliant Healer and Country Bumpkin, but those were fun so far. Brilliant Healer has bizarre episode order, to such an extent I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, though. The second episode is, for all intents and purposes, episode one, but isn't even painted as a flashback. Not sure if they were released out of order, or someone is Subverting Expectations, but it was weird. Fun, though.
Your Forma. I'm a sucker for the conspiracy/thriller genre, especially since it's so sparse in anime. The season's just starting, so I can't speak for how much I'll like it going forward, but the interesting setting and setup gets points so far. It will likely be somewhat generic within the genre, but the genre itself is so rare it's still fun.
A Ninja and an Assassin Living Together is unique, but more in tone. Funny and sort of disturbing.
The Catcher in the Ballpark! Cute!
I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Season 2. I really enjoyed season one, and it's nice to see it's back. Also, the long names always crack me up.
Fire Force Season 3. Haven't started it yet, as I want to go back and rewatch, but I love the setting. It wasn't always great, but the atmosphere won some major points, and the season one OP and ED were so great they boost my opinion of the anime.
Medalist. It was last season, but I just want to shout it out. Really wholesome sports anime, with excellent art.
Worth noting that the manga's available on Humble Bundle right now if anyone goes for official releases. I picked it up more for Shaman King myself.
I'm giving Rock is a Lady's Modesty a shot. Absolute schizophrenia of a fancy girls school show (as one person elsewhere put it, "going from 'gokigenyou' to 'gokigofuckyourself' within a second"). Maybe the CGI of the instrument playing will be a bit off putting, but they apparently really wanted the details accurate, and motion capture was the best option.
I can never really get into those shows where it's a 100% girl cast. They're always a little too much like cotton candy; sweet and colorful, but empty and too saccharine. But I might give it a shot as I am a musician myself.
Where can you find good newer anime? Good to hear that anime hasn’t been affected by the current year bug as much
Animepahe (ru), animekai (to) are the ones I'm currently enjoying.
I just see what looks interesting on MAL and then set sail to watch it.
There's a bunch of sites to stream it, you'll have to endure ads usually but they're otherwise free. BiliBili? wcofun.net? Several others.
You can be a pirate? Look for Nyaa.si Or even the old warhorse: Pirate Bay. Plus lots of others, but it's tough to beat Nyaa.
Thanks!
Finding good anime as they release has always been an utter crapshoot. You gotta wade through a river of mediocrity in order to find a handful of gems.
Here's your go-to source for what's currently releasing: https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/schedule
The ratings on there are...suspect at best in my opinion. There's plenty of old shows that you've never heard of that are fantastic, so give us a sense of what kind of show you're interested in and we can guide you towards something good.
Wholly unprompted, I'd suggest Oh Edo Rocket for a good mix of humor, sci-fi and historic period piece. Torrent it on nyaa.si. If you can't find it there I can probably figure out how to get you an invite to bakabt.
Thank you!
Yes, MAL rates are 'sus' sometimes. One needs to look at the total votes, the high traffic ones should be more accurate.
I think 6.5 is the "average"? So if it's under 6 it's likely bad, and over 7.5 or 7.7 it's likely good. Of course it's just a "rule of thumb" since individual anime can be just your favorite but low, or horrible but hyped.
https://hianimez.to/ just fixed their loading issues so I can recomment it again.
As always, you need a good adblocker.
Thank you kind stranger! I looked on the 'Movies' page and there they are: a bunch of movies I've been waiting for! 😽 (to show up on Nyaa. They may be there already but I forget to look for them)
Oi! Don't forget to finish apothecary s2! It's still airing and probably one of the best this year. The others I watch have already been mentioned. I am trying to catch up to fire force though.
Honestly I just don't get into period stuff at all, so I never ended up watching the first season.
HIGHLY recommended to check it out. It's slowly turned into one of my all time favorites. The setting is interesting, the characters are interesting, some edge of your seat kind of stuff happening a lot but also slower, more mellow stuff that does world building amazingly well. I cannot praise it enough, I even got a lot of friends into it who usually don't like that sort of setting either(we're all kinda shounentards but I've been slowly branching out).
Just started watching Red Ranger Becomes An Adventurer in Another World. Waiting for Dandadan and Kaiju Number 8 season 2.
I think there's a movie coming out for Kaiju no 8 before a new season, similar to what's happening to Reincarnated as a Slime S4
Oh shit, I forget. Nice!
I was just thinking of rewatching S1, so now I definitely will.
But when is the Kaijuu number 8 movie dropping? I haven't seen it show up on any of the trackers yet but I'm pretty sure it aired back in March.
I just looked it up; March 28th as someone else mentioned...but that was only in Japan, and only theaters, it sounds like.
It sounds like the worldwide release was yesterday, under the name Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon. Not sure the distribution, though, and it's also listed as "screenings." Also, it sounds like it's just a compilation of season 1, with one new episode.
That seems like a pretty key detail. If it's like other shows that do recap compilations then it's safe to assume that episode is either the pilot for the next season or inconsequential to the larger plot. Good to know I won't have to worry about missing out on content then.
Almost certainly the latter.
From Wikipedia:
It's going to be filler, possibly even comedy, based on the name.
March 28th, then season 2 is tentatively releasing July.
Reports were wrong. The movie is dropping tomorrow in select theaters. I see some AMCs are airing it.
Red Ranger is fucking great. I hope that gets an S2.
Honestly this season looks pretty underwhelming so I'm probably going to spend it catching up on my backlog for the most part.
Ballpark de Tsukamaete is probably the most intriguing slice of life show I've seen come across my radar in a while, but I don't really go for that genre so I'll just wait for people to start raving about it before wasting any time with it.
I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level was a show I watched the first season of because there was a drought at the time but I might go back in for a second go if I deplete my backlog. It's good to have some disgustingly wholesome shows mixed in as a palette cleanser once in a while.
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman looks like it's borderline Isekai slop which is the sort of trash I go for. It's also leaning into the emerging trend of shows that cater to men who are aging out of being able to relate to the youthful male protagonists and I am not above indulging in a show that is deliberately catering to me.
The Guilty Gear anime is probably going to be unholy trash because of what they've done to Bridget. I might check it out for an episode or two just to get a feel for the production quality but I sincerely doubt I'll be able to stomach it if Daisuke's recent retconning for the trannies is any indication of what I can expect from the show.
The beginning after the end: The first episode made me think it was going to be jobless reincarnation without the pedophilia, but the quality is certainly lacking. action scenes are a slideshow, I'll still watch it through though.
from Old country bumpkin to master swordsman: this show intrigued me because the animation looks like it references real European sword fighting, rather than grafting Japanese sword fighting onto European weapons. The plot and setup are decent enough, and the sword fights have been entertaining so far, but to my disappointment it's a degenerate harem anime. The woman are one-dimensional and comically easy. at least they are actual woman though, instead of girls. I'll watch it through to see where it goes.
windbreaker season 2: I heavily enjoyed season 1, and season 2 so far looks good. it's basically West side story-style gangs wars, but very colorful and optimistic. The animated fights are really good too. excited to continue it!
I don't mind The Beginning After the End. I don't really pay much attention to animation, and when you've got your attention divided already by having to read the story on the screen, it ends up not being that big of a deal.
I couldn't finish windbreaker season 1. It just got too saccharine and the fight scenes weren't enough to carry it for me.
Good to hear that Country Bumpkin is shaping up nicely though. I'm excited to jump into that later.
TBATE just has such a bad animation, it physically hurts because I keep slapping my forehead. I wanted that one to be good but sadly it just isn't,all of it is a slide show not only the action scenes.
I've read country bumpkin as a manga so hopefully they don't ruin the adaptation.
Trying to get a feel for the season as right now it's trying to see which are good. The beginning after the end has me concerned on animation quality.
I read a lot and I worry that a lot won't get the Solo Levelling treatment so fall off due to quality. Like I'm reading The Regressed Mercenary's Machinations and the fight choreography is the best part of that manwha.
Those! And a ton more. One more to add, only 1-2 disappointments so far, but it's early so they can be redeemed. The cut line is pretty low though, since I'm watching too many as it is.
Bye Bye, Earth 2nd Season ( a guilty pleasure!)
Anne Shirley (it's SO good!)
Kowloon Generic Romance (good so far)
Enen no Shouboutai: San no Shou (I like it, it really grew on me)
Slime Taoshite 300-nen (stupid fun? might get dropped)
Kanchigai no Atelier Meister: (fun so far!)
Maebashi Witches (might be good? might get dropped)
Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray (absolute gold!)
Shoushimin Series 2nd Season (platinum goodness)
Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Season 2 (it's so wholesome!)
Apocalypse Hotel (might be great)
Uchuujin MuuMuu (stupid but fun)
Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai (surprisingly good after 2 episodes)
Mono (we'll soon see)
I'm still enjoying 100 Girlfriends who really really really love you. Second season just wrapped so I'll probably be getting that watched this weekend.
I know a lot of people got put off by the babyfetish shit, and that's fair, but I've read the entire manga and that's just one character that everyone in universe is also disgusted by. The anime just moves slower so it seems more focused on until the cast expands to dilute her from being so front and center.
I've also recently started Jitsu wa Watashi wa. I read the entire manga back in February and loved it, so I'm trying the anime. It seems like a sad "no season 2 ever" thing, so I'm not expecting much but getting to her Aizawa panic out loud will make up for it.
I don't really watch much new stuff otherwise, or watch anime in general, but I consume manga like a glutton and could probably list 20 of those I've read just this season if anyone cares.
Jitsu wa Watashi wa = underrated! It was lots of fun :>
It certainly became one of my favorite manga quickly, though I don't enjoy the second half quite as much. Too much time on long, dramatic arcs making sure everyone (except the ones who are dropped entirely) gets their storyline wrapped up that it loses all the fun.
So far I'm watching:
Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level Max ni Nattemashita: Sono Ni
Danjo no Yuujou wa Seiritsu suru? (Iya, Shinai!!)
Kowloon Generic Romance
Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai
Shiunji-ke no Kodomotachi
Kanchigai no Atelier Meister: Eiyuu Party no Moto Zatsuyougakari ga
Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai to Konyaku Haki sareta Seijo wa Ringok
Ballpark de Tsukamaete!
Chotto dake Ai ga Omoi Dark Elf ga Isekai kara Oikaketekita
Who the fuck still watches so much seasonal slop? It's all garbage. I have a decade long backlog of the one or two decent shows a year, and more on the old classics watch list. I don't have the time to waste on isekai slop or generic shit adaptations of weak source material.
The only things worth checking out as they air are anime originals, and they aren't always good either, just more likely. Adaptations are always best ignored until they're complete, and only bothered with if the source is decent.
Cool story.
So far I only stuck with Country Bumpkin.
Liked the manga of Brilliant Healer and Atelier Meister. But dropped Brilliant Healer because wtf. was even that first episode? And considering dropping Atelier Meister as well, because they cut out like half of the scenes from the manga and that annoys me.
Checked out Your Forma as well and immediately dropped it, because once again wtf was even that first episode? It's like they accidentally released ep 12 of season 3 and there wasn't even a hint of indication that the anachronistic story telling was on purpose.
Have yet to check out the rest. (Well except for the panty one, 'cuz I checked out the manga in the past and the chick immediately pissed me off.)
