Yea that’s dumb. As a kid I had no issues rooting for Cal Ripken and Will Clark. Loved Nolan Ryan and my all time favorite QB is Aikman. The mindset you describe is beyond idiotic
Not at all. I’m a life long collector of baseball/football/hockey cards and not sure if you are aware of the junk wax era (80s and 90s cards were so over produced that even the mega stars aren’t worth that much without being graded) but I finally got a Will Clark rookie card a few years ago and paid like 3 bucks for it. The owner of the shop was smirking over my excitement (also got a Mark Grace rookie that day) but I told him they may only be a few bucks but they have a ton of sentimental value since I was a huge fan as a kid.
Yea I’m aware of the financial aspect but I collect mainly for enjoyment and ideally will pass on my collection to kids/nephews/nieces when I die along with my massive book collection.
You can make a quick buck by flipping at the right time (for example Kobe Bryant cards skyrocketed when he died) but the only way you will get rich quick is stumbling across a classic collection
I wasn't aware of his big power early seasons with the Giants.
Interesting that his last big power season with 29 dingers was 1991 at age 27 though he continued to play effectively for another decade until 36.
It's also his birthday today, 61!
Interesting career shape, considering the 90s were known for their power with the start of the steroid era and attempts to reinvigorate the game after the '94 strike killed interest and attendance.
Almost makes one wonder if Clark suffered some mid-career injury like a broken wrist that sapped power and made him change his playstyle.
Edit: Reading Clark's bios, it seems he developed a nagging foot issue called a Morton's neuroma in the late 80s-early 90s and was plagued by knee problems later in his career.
I always thought of Clark as a straight-laced gentleman (probably because he was white and wasn't uber athletic for a ball player), but his bios paint him as a cancer in the clubhouse.
if you looked at his physique in his prime, it’s hard for me to believe he used steroids, he was just a tall strong louisiana country boy. as far as him being a clubhouse cancer he was built similarly to other competitive alpha red asses like paul o’neil or pete rose, but he wanted to win, had passion, and the only ones who hated him were the lazy sons of bitches who just play for their paycheck.
Clark wasn't just a singles guy. He definitely hit with some power. In his prime, he was usually good for 20-30 home runs, 100+ RBIs, and his slugging percentage was decent, too. He cracked the top 5 in the league a couple of times, in that.
He did all this with a very modest physique, playing at a time when his contemporaries were starting to get all juiced up, too.
That black bitch complaining that her salary isn't enough to cover her $8k a month rent is the epitome of entitlement. Nevermind living above your means, why the hell is she renting when, as a professional athlete, she only has a decade at best of peak earning potential? One bad pivot and she can tear her ACL, which women are more vulnerable to than men, and her career is over.
Renting often makes sense for professional athletes. They can be traded any time. Their career can end any time. They spend much of their time in other cities. Many don’t spend more than a year at a time in one place.
Living above your means, or burning that much money in rent, period, is moronic.
Renting also can make sense for people who are not going to stay in place for long.
I've seen different analyses, and it of courses hinges on whether property values are going up, down, or staying the same, but the usual numbers I've seen are that ownership makes sense if you will be there for 3+ years.
I know cuz I did it for years. You pay 20k in fees at least every time you buy or sell if you do it the standard way
You don't have to. But then you're getting into "work as your own professional" territory, and you can slow build your own house at that rate.
Nah you can pay a landlord not to maintain their property. Who doesn't is not who you'd think it'd be. It's the highly sophisticated ones who know that properties are a pit. Rentals: you just trash until it's time to sell to someone who will gut it. Nice rentals only make sense as a temporary arrangement, and I have done that too : acting as a resident property manager / housesitter for discounted rent. Typically renting from someone who lives out of town.
They had the most marketable player they've ever had join the league last year and their response was to let a bunch of ugly, angry black lesbians try to cripple her all season. There's no fixing the WNBA.
Seriously. Literally for the first time ever people cared about the WNBA. Most WNBA teams only had full stadiums when Caitlin Clark was playing. (Even when she was the visitor) 17% of all flagrant fouls were against Clark. I’m willing to forgive CC for being politically woke that’s how much I want the WNBA to learn their lesson.
An entire league of ratchets sprinkled with white lesbians. The WNBA is modern feminism cranked up to 100. No situational awareness of how their league only exists because of the NBA subsidization. These bitches would cut of their flat noses to spite their own face. It would be ideal if CC played exclusively in Europe & the wnba was then left to die.
There isn’t a problem with casually enjoying sports. America certainly has a problem with “bread and circuses”. Grown men at work will argue with each other, and know exactly how many rushing yards a person had. But they don’t know the basics of how society and their country functions.
I've been enjoying the McDonald's commercials with Angel Reese. She moves in slow-motion, even in the commercial, letting viewers know what they'll see if they bother to tune into a game
How could the WNBA be worth $10 billion “someday?” It’s been 30 years and it’s barely worth $10. There’s playing the long game and then there’s playing the delusional game.
Idiots who actually believe all the propaganda, they're willing to slit their own throats to "show up the Man!"
This is also a common Unionist tactic.
There's no way on this Earth they are dumb enough to believe they DESERVE the same multi-million $$$ contracts the Men have. At least I'd like to think that, but I know better 😢
Wimbledon & "professional" tennis is mostly to blame. I'm still shocked that NOT ONE "trans-woman" has won the "Women's" side yet... or even entered! The prize money is identical even though the Men get 5X the ratings & revenue...
you know what, this is my controversial opinion, but i was far more entertained watching caitlin clark’s fever team battle for their playoff spot, than any slop product the boring ass modern nba puts out
Earvin "Magic" Johnson's teammates at Michigan State heard all the stories of this virtuoso at tiny little Indiana State and admit they all thought it was a black guy...until said virtuoso, Larry Bird, appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Magic and the other Spartan players had no issue with him otherwise, though, and today, Magic and Bird are best friends.
In the NBA, Dennis Rodman, then on the Detroit Pistons, once said that Larry Bird got lots of praise and accolades, but wouldn't be getting them if he was black. Teammate Isiah Thomas repeated and agreed with Rodman's sentiment: "If he was black, he'd be just another good guy."
Dennis Rodman eventually turned things around and saw the light. Isiah Thomas never did.
I'm so sick of hearing white people saying it's wrong to root for other white people, while championing for black role models for black kids.
Yea that’s dumb. As a kid I had no issues rooting for Cal Ripken and Will Clark. Loved Nolan Ryan and my all time favorite QB is Aikman. The mindset you describe is beyond idiotic
It's been awhile since I thought about Will Clark.
The .300 BA, singles-hitting 1B is an archetype that doesn’t really exist anymore .

That's the proper reason for collecting stuff. Trying to make a huge profit is a delusion, probably.
Yea I’m aware of the financial aspect but I collect mainly for enjoyment and ideally will pass on my collection to kids/nephews/nieces when I die along with my massive book collection.

will the thrill had some pop, look at his stats, he isn’t exactly ichiro

That's what 50 years of full spectrum subversion and propaganda via academia/publishing/movies/TV will do

Renting makes sense for people that can't afford to own.

Its true if you move around a lot. The issue is establishing anything if you move that much.
I know cuz I did it for years. You pay 20k in fees at least every time you buy or sell if you do it the standard way You don't have to. But then you're getting into "work as your own professional" territory, and you can slow build your own house at that rate.
Also makes sense for people who are incapable of taking care of necessary maintenance of a property on their own.
You can pay for that just like how you pay for it through renting.
You can, but even that requires some long-term thinking and coordination.
Nah you can pay a landlord not to maintain their property. Who doesn't is not who you'd think it'd be. It's the highly sophisticated ones who know that properties are a pit. It's a black hood rat from Baltimore.
That's the most damaging person to pay. Imagine being the neighbor of this 8k in rent place.

McDonalds set up a marketing deal with Angel Reese specifically because she's not Caitlin Clark. It's completely insane.
If the WNBA was wiped out, what would the NBA do with all that money they would save
He goes into that.
An entire league of ratchets sprinkled with white lesbians. The WNBA is modern feminism cranked up to 100. No situational awareness of how their league only exists because of the NBA subsidization. I agree but I don’t think the NBA has the balls to drop the WNBA.
People on the beneficial end of this situation are usually entitled rather than grateful. That's why you don't do it.
I know, sportsball, and female sportsball at that, but trust me, this is relevant to the culture war.
There isn’t a problem with casually enjoying sports. America certainly has a problem with “bread and circuses”. Grown men at work will argue with each other, and know exactly how many rushing yards a person had. But they don’t know the basics of how society and their country functions.
I follow Steve "UrinatingTree" Linkowski for this reason. I love his work.
It helps that he's largely on our side.
If WNBA players go on strike, will anyone notice?
The noise.
They could bring in trans athletes as scabs. The quality of play would probably improve a little.
I've been enjoying the McDonald's commercials with Angel Reese. She moves in slow-motion, even in the commercial, letting viewers know what they'll see if they bother to tune into a game

30 more years of Bidenomics and inflation might get it there, but not for any good reason.
Idiots who actually believe all the propaganda, they're willing to slit their own throats to "show up the Man!"

Best thing about this initialism is how little effort it then needs to add further trolling.
Calm down man. And I hope that's a mole. Why did I watch?
Never heard a thing about Clark till a black player stiff armed or shoulder checked her to the ground and her own black teammates laughed at her.
Women are jealous. Add race jealousy to that and you get some really hateful bitches
Oh no! Anyway…
you know what, this is my controversial opinion, but i was far more entertained watching caitlin clark’s fever team battle for their playoff spot, than any slop product the boring ass modern nba puts out
Were they this pissy about Larry Bird back in the day?
Kinda-sorta.
Earvin "Magic" Johnson's teammates at Michigan State heard all the stories of this virtuoso at tiny little Indiana State and admit they all thought it was a black guy...until said virtuoso, Larry Bird, appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In this case "the house always wins" refers to a masonic lodge...
