So first you have the unenviable position of being compared to Alan Rickman's performance
...aaannnd now you have to deal with being called a raceswap DEI hire (which you probably are), are Black actors either too dim or too desperate NOT to accept these career ruining roles?
A reminder JK told Rickman what the twist about Snape was before the book it happened in ever came out. He was questioned during film shooting why he kept doing scenes in certain ways that the directors/producers didn't understand and it's because he was the only one who knew the actual character other than Rowling.
This means in hindsight his performance ends up being far better than initially realised however with the twist now known it's never going to carry the same gravitas and if modern writers are consistent in their inability to write nuance it was come across with all the subtlety of 4th wall breaking winks to the audience whenever Snape does something shitty towards the characters.
And Alan Rickman would have been precisely the type of excellent actor to know how to subtly drop those hints and clues without ever really letting the audience know until it happened. Making the second watching of the films even better.
No one else could have performed the nuances required for Dr. Lazarus.
Unironically true. While the catchphrase gets memed to shit all throughout the film the time he sincerely, and softly, speaks the whole thing as Quelik lies dying in his arms shifts the tone from pure humour to primal rage.
By Grabthar's hammer, by the Suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged.
Promised retribution aside Quelik dies happier than he ever might have expected because of that.
And then the unarmed, untrained civilian actor filled with fury charges and punches the alien soldier who had the gun in the face. [Yes the gun was jammed]
are Black actors either too dim or too desperate NOT to accept these career ruining roles?
I think part of it is acting as a career has been almost ruined already. White or black, there's not much cultural room to come to be considered one of The Greats anymore. Actors have ruined actors. So it's not like there' much more respect to be gained by passing up DEI roles and waiting it out for a Respectable Role.
Also, since the industry has been so heavily DEId, most of the roles for blacks are DEI, since the industry cares about skin color so much. As much as we rightly rail against forced diversity...it's honestly not an enviable position to be a black actor trying to be respected nowadays.
Its why if you ask someone to name the first black actor or the biggest black actor they know.. theyll name someone old. Usual denzel, morgan freeman, wesley snipes, will smith. No one cares or admire any new ones
I sometimes will watch artist or AI draw characters as described in the book compared to the tv version and it's funny when they race swap. Nobody dare talks about the blaring different

If they had shame, it would be rough.

A true talent.

“By Grabthar’s Hammer, what a savings.”

Exactly.
Sadly, DEI destroyed the chances of competent nonwhites in many sectors.
John Boyega might've had a chance, had Finn received a proper character arc and the Star Wars sequels not been entirely about Rey.
I mean, I think that has more to do with that Stars Wars is - or was - a massive franchise, than him being a great actor.
He's no Morgan Freeman or Denzel Washington, who deserve the fame and accolades.
Actors? Respect? There's a reason why thespians were so looked down on in olden times.
Honestly, I think Hollywood ruined them by promoting fellow Cluster B's to the top of the pack as heroes.
Don’t forget that in the books Snape is clearly described
So were a lot of characters and that hasn't stopped attempts at changing a lot of things about them.
True. Also in the past I did t care or notice so much because we weren’t bombarded with constant race and gender swaps while being lectured about it
Blackwashing.

Yep. Elephant in the room
Why not both?
Stop comparing him to Rickman you racist.
