Is it just me, or are they actually learning? Veilguard getting completely snubbed? By these ass lickers?
Where's Stellar Blade?
Also also: I fucking hate how many times there's remakes on this. Even Silent Hill 2 but mainly FF7 "rebirth". You could argue "but ff7 doesn't count" yes, it does. I don't think remakes have any place in any of those awards, you're basically recycling content we've seen years ago as "new and original" when it's anything but. Silent Hill 2 for example changed the soundtrack and it just sounds bland now, yet it's nominated...wtf.
Also on Veilguard: Look at who's on the jury, a lot of dicksuckers for Veilguard and it could only weasel its way onto accessibility? Well, no surprise there, you gotta be severely handicapped in the brain regions to be interested in this game in the first place with how shitty it is.
Just shows me Veilguard is utterly dreadful and people would've called em out for it...they learned nothing, trust me.
I don't even like TGA but was Stellar Blade's gameplay even any good? All I hear about the game is having a sexy protagonist
Gameplay is good, just got annoyed that they censored it at launch. Seems they fixed a lot of it. I bought it, played quite a bit of it and sent it back because of said censorship. I'll have to buy it again when it's coming out for pc.
This is true for a lot of remakes, but the FF7 ones are significantly different enough that I say this doesn't apply to them. Like, I don't particularly like the Remake, but they built almost a new game for it in every way but the broad backbone of the story. Its got more "new" development to it than 90% of sequels do.
I don't think it should have been made or done like that to begin with (and FF7 never dying needs to fucking end to begin with), but it is a mostly new game more so than something like Silent Hill is.
I saw a bit of it, was turned off and did not feel the urge to try the other one. Story's still following the original, no?
I didn't finish Remake (so I didn't touch Rebirth), but from where I got (I think like 1/3) its the same story with extra details to fill in and justify being a full priced game that only covers a small part of the original story.
The Time Janny thing comes in towards the end and adds a meta level that's all new, but the story otherwise seems to be the same skeleton with just some details expanded as far as I could tell.
But given that, and the otherwise massive changes , its closer to "two different adaptations of the same work" that someone attempting to accurately remake an outdated title. Which at minimum I think qualifies it as closer to "new game" than something like SH2 or even RE4 remakes did.
The story is slightly different both on the macro level and small interactions.
If you liked the first it's close enough that it doesn't feel like the story has been distorted beyond recognition, but enough different that it doesn't get boring.
I can't imagine how stupid you have to be in order to change that game's soundtrack. Then again it tracks with the rest of the changes they've made to that game in that they've completely missed everything that made that game good.
I think it's still kinda the same, same composer but it just sounded different to how it did before. Honestly, this is one game I don't even see the need for a remake, especially one in the resident evil style.
Most games don't actually need remakes, they just need to be playable on current systems.
It's up for Best Action Game and Best Score and Music
I wanted to say "but Rebirth isn't even good", but then I remembered which award we're talking about and what the usual standards are.
I hear you there. I couldn't even stomach finishing Remake, pirated.
Rebirth is worse than Remake IMO. Completely wastes your time with endless minigames and boring sidequests.
With Remake I was still torn, because while all the scenes that were "like FF7 but different" and usually involved the bullshit ghost squad, filled me with seething hatred, the stuff that was usually decried as padding made me quite happy (fleshing out Barret's idiot trio for example). But then it turns out Sephiroth is the end boss, because Squeenix couldn't even keep it in their pants for one game and I just wanted to suckstart a shotgun.
Retarded consoomer that I am, I still bought Rebirth, but I'm stuck at the Nibelheim incident, because they couldn't even get Sephiroth's reason for going insane right and I just about lost all interest. The things I got spoiled with do not help. (Motherfucking multiverse, ayooooo!)
Even though I barely played it, I'm actually willing to bet, the story is worse than Dirge of fucking Cerberus.
It is a sad state of affairs that the story of the stupid ftp gacha game has been more interesting so far.
Rebirth opinion for me is simple- that's the timeframe the crew would encounter the enemy Jemnezmy. Didn't appear at all in Rebirth. Not interested.
Is that that sexy lady monster? 'cuz if so, the yeah, they are very weird with what they will and will not censor.
Shiva still looks sexy and you can dress the girls in Bikinis at Costa del Sol. But then they cut out stuff like Cloud finding Tifa's underwear in her room (and they gave her an undershirt to hide her cleavage in the cowboy outfit) and they completely massacred Cid's character.
Hell, Sephiroth's changed motivation smells like censorship as well. Because in Rebirth he's just mad, because he found out, he's the result of an experiment. But in the original, once he found out he was part Ancient and read that the Ancients all died protecting the planet from calamity, while the other humans did nothing, he gets this massive victim hood complex and wants to take revenge on the humans for what happened to the Ancients and for destroying the planet.
And Remake had shit like that as well, with the bomb at the reactor. In the original it's Jessie's fuck up, because she used a bomb that she just found from the original Avalanche group. There is some implication that Shinra could have manipulated something, but it never goes further. In Remake, nope, Jessie didndu nuffin, it was all evil Shinra.
It’s a legitimately great actual fucking video game.
I'm amazed Failguard isn't on there.
It's nice to see Balatro get some recognition.
Helldivers 2 .. got the Community Manager award from these newspigs...
The one good thing about Metaphor: ReFantazio is that one woman who, through personal experience, gradually realizes her socialist economic views don't work in practice.
As an ex-leftist, that was a bitter pill for me to swallow, too.
IDK what their rules around early access are but technically, Satisfactory released in 2024.
"Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree"
So DLC can be game of the year now?
yeah this year is a 1st one. they probably want to avoid giving goty to black monkey.
Balatro is gud. Just wanted to put that out there.
So, remake, a basic game, a DLC of a really good game, and another attempt to make a Mario 64 for Sony?
Was this just a bad year?
Shadow of the Erdtree fucking sucked.
Monkey Man game would probably be my goty but it was so bloated with content I never finished it.
Erdtree didn't suck, but it didn't add anything deserving of being treated as a GotY contender, not to mention its balancing issues left way too many people frustrated.
Wukong being bloated with content though? Well, let's see if it gets a sale soon, because that'll be one of the next ones on my list when I finish FFXVI.
I’m grading on a curve: For taking over two years to make and adjusting for how great Elden Ring was it fucking sucked, easily the worst thing FromSoft has ever worked on. Huge barren maps with zero interesting enemies or content, piss-poor enemy variety, and some of the absolute worst boss fights From has ever made, it shits all over the lore from the main game, gay incest, I could go on.
I would still definitely recommend WuKong. I think I just hot burned out on it but it’s still solid. Idk what else came out this year that I could consider goty.
Gambling game everyone got addicted to because gambling good and FOTM power for people who don't actually play many video games.
Told its a really good game with more heart than the entire PS5 existence combined. Probably deserved.
The other FOTM backed by infinite Chinese money that nobody even cared about once its "they stood up to the Woke mob!" cudgel wore off and its "record breaking steam chart!" became obvious Chinese bugmen buying it because "China numbah won."
Of course the new not-Persona would be there, especially with its recent release. Heard was decent, and that most of the politically drive dialogue people passed around is meant to be the "bad position" they learn from over their arc.
We all knew it would be there.
Squeenix might be bleeding money constantly, but FF can't die quietly.
It's a combo-focused roguelike, not a gambling game. It's based on poker mechanics, but the appeal comes from building Rube Goldberg machines that do ridiculous amounts of damage.
Wukong was a great game.
Even Lords of the Fallen understood that half the value of a souls game is the time between bosses dungeon crawling.
Do you mean the 1st or 2nd Lords of the Fallen? Have you played the first? It's been on my wishlist for ages and never know if I should buy it.
In this case both, but that's not a high bar to clear.
The first is legitimate garbage in most ways. Its generic and overall boring, the only reason its remembered is because it was basically the "first soulslike." I played it way back and got about half way before falling out, can't remember why. Either way, you can get it for dirt cheap so its not a huge loss to buy it for a few dollars just to fuck around.
The second is a pretty good all around game. Nothing to make it stand out super well (other than its otherworld mechanic which is really good), but it is a great game if you just can't get enough Dark Souls.
