The best part about Imp trying to lifeboat KiA5 is that the sole mod I mentioned is also active on ConPro, so that gives you an idea of the compromises Imp is willing to make if it means he can keep whining.
Isn't Mastadon essentially a decentralized Twitter clone in terms of functionality? That means it's useless for actual discussion and more focused on feeling important when your little blurb hits a lot of eyeballs.
I would not suggest using most mastodon instances because they are very leftist and ban happy. Nice Crew seems good though, I would suggest other fediverse instances poast or baest instead in general.
They are mostly just alternatives to twitter though. There are federated alternatives to reddit but I think scored/communities.win is probably more popular.
