As there was an endless succession of "conquering hero" stories in each expansion, eventually the player base started asking for a change of tone, more threatening enemies, and stories where we don't actually win in the end. This was right around where Hollywood began it's dark and gritty phase, and the rest is history.
Basically the problem is with people trying to live in fictional worlds, then when that proves insufficient they try to change the media to fill that role instead of changing how they interact with media and the real world.
