The flyer has a list of all the genders that are allowed (essentially women, and delusional men who think they are women or any other trendy delusion, just as long as you aren't a normal man). They are saying that they want to create a safe and fun space for these people. Been going to this store for years, but they changed ownership a few years back and the people behind the register wear nametags with their pronouns. It is weird because they prominently display the lgbt stuff that doesn't sell at the front of the store, but the main comics that are sold are from their large back issue section. Also have a large manga and tabletop section.
As you would expect with comic book stores, the main customers are males so they are following the Marvel/DC model of ignoring the actual fanbase to cater to a very tiny minority. They refuse to accept that the audience who wants heavy lgbt content is small. It is a nice audience. I've been to bookstores that have a gay section but they know better than to make that the main section.
I'm really torn because I'm leaning towards going further out to buy my comic books, but they have a great back issue section and the Manga is a little cheaper than Barnes and Noble.
Really sucks because that place used to be a great gathering for typical nerdy guys to discuss comics or debate whatever nerdy thing you wanted or play D&D. I used to always have long discussions about Star Trek with the assistant manager (way before Discovery was even thought of).
Time to find a new comic book store.
What is it with rainbow freaks and comic books?
Of course they will say "it has always been inclusive/woke". I will say that in my whole life I've never been excluded from a group of comic book fans.....because I was an actual fan and knew my stuff and wasn't demanding everything change to suit me.
Exactly. It was always inclusive. And you are now being excluded so you take your business elsewhere.
And if you want/need to access their back issue section then go there and use it agian.
There is a store further away that has an even bigger back issue section and the guys that run it are old school fans and seem pretty based. Just a longer drive but worth it
Carpool. Take a friend to shop for back issues. Split the gas and buy twice as many books together.
I'll parrot Arch here. He was talking about Warhammer, but it applies more broadly:
Geekdom was never for everyone.
It was for anyone-- anyone who had passion for the material.
So now we have faux Geeks, who feigned interest to gain entry putting their politics first.
Costumes, secret identities, spandex....
You jest, but Kevin Conroy, the definitive voice of Batman, channeled anger over his treatment as an outed gay man into the role. That's where he drew his inspiration for the edge he voiced when Bruce Wayne put on the mask.
The difference is that Batman: the Animated Series was about Batman-- not queerness. These days, the mask has slipped and it's all about The Message.
I didn't find out he was gay until after he was already dead.
It's annoying they capture all this shit, out of spite...spite and autism.
The comic/game stores in my area are quite woke.
It certainly keeps my anger fueled knowing that all of the things they try to take from me, and those around me, they don't even want. They just don't want me to have it and take pleasure in knowing it upsets me as they defile it.
I guess that is the rule now and not the exception.
Vote with your dollars where it actually makes a difference. You will get more of whatever you pay for. Fuck em.
True. Just sucks because I’ve been going there for years but they have gone off the deep end
Your comic book store is lost, there's no fixing it.
My local comic book store overinvested in stocking Marvel and kept barely afloat by hosting Magic events. They were lefty, more libs than progressives. Lower key 'allies' rather than true believers.
A second store opened in the same building, and when they started hosting Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh, the first store went under. This store is just straight Geek shit, minimal politics.
If you can't support them, support their competitors.
Be the change.
Yup. If a company says "I don't want your money"... Why give it your money? That's mean of you, they don't want it!
Ask them if they could order you some of the Comicsgate issues and then purposely mispronounce their names like 'She-Ra' and 'He-Man'.
"Kathy-She-ur, I couldn't find a copy of the latest issue of Cyber-Frog. Could you order me one?"
Go in, read and preview at your leisure to find things you want, then go buy it online. You get the best of both worlds in exchange for a bit of waiting.
They don't really gain any benefit from you just existing in the store, so you aren't supporting their bullshit, but you also aren't shooting yourself in the foot by buying things you can't physically inspect and judge first.
Nerdy hangouts are the biggest focus for subversion these days. They are hoping you'll submit just to keep them, and then wear you down with constant demands to keep yourself from being kicked out.
Meh, wear a rainbow flag pin and show up. Maybe you can find a shy autistic girl to save by helping her find Christ.
If I went in there and started talking about Christ I’m sure they would ban me for life. But not a bad idea
If you're going out anyway... "Witness me!" but with Testimony sounds like a good send-off.
You don't go there to preach, you go there to get the digits of shy chicks who are deluded enough to think that is a "safe space". Your cover story is just talking about comic books, which you like anyway.
Picking up cute girls at a comic book store. We are firmly in reality lol
He said shy & autistic.
He never said cute.
Fair
Stop being a pussy. Go in one last time to tell them why you'll never shop there again and drive the extra 10 minutes to consume your products while you get excited for next product.
Not a bad idea to tell them they are losing a former very loyal customer. Anything I buy is old so at least I won’t get excited for next product
look up the official stats on men vs women, print them out, and show them to the owner, then get some popcorn and enjoy the mental gymnastics extravaganza.
A profit minority night more like it
Exactly
Identify as a killdozer and crash their party./s
I do remember some tech conference that was only for women but a bunch of guys came in and claimed to be non binary. Their rules
This is the natural progression for them from FanFic to Gatekeeping
