Saw it trending in Overseerr so i snatched the whole season cause i needed something to watch this weekend.
I went in blind, all I know is that is based on some Chinese Novels.
I watched the first couple of episodes and so far:
- The two main characters are insufferable girl bosses, specially the Eiza Gonzalez character. Like the bestests of the best in their fields.
- Males are either simps and / or buffons.
- Every relationship is interracial. Asian / Curry eater, with white dude simping over 6/10 Asian. Whitexican Coal burner.
- Cop is kid is a faggot, because.. reasons?
I HIGHLY doubt a Chinese author would create these characters, so this makes me believe NF just did a Witcher 2.0.
Anyone that has read the books or is familiar with the story, whats the take?
Plus Netflix. I mean what did OP expect?
That's like sticking your dick in an electrical outlet and then wondering why you get shocked.
OP just wants to know if the rest of the shit sandwich tastes like the first half of the shit sandwich ... Okay?!
They ruined it in exactly the same way they ruined Game of Thrones in the last two seasons, only not as bad. Great source material, good enough kick off in the beginning, then a hard fumble. Shit just happens one thing after another with little logic to the order and the way it’s presented makes no sense after a while. Characters aren’t very believable. That’s not even considering the DEI stuff.
It is pretty hilarious that people seem to exclusively pair up with people of opposite races. The Asian cop actor also gets made fun of as a fat old out of date dad, and his ungrateful son insulting him while being unemployed and playing video games is gay for no reason. It’s not even a plot point and he’s a non character, it’s just inserted for no reason. He’s basically playing Mortal Kombat and looks down on his dad that’s paying the bills and talks about his boyfriend and that his dead mother had bad taste for getting with his dad and fathering him and funding him to be a loser. There’s an authentic hatred for the dad there as a normal heterosexual father that had a kid.
I haven't watched either series since I'm not a masochist, but my guess is that it is worse. I can suspend disbelief for women with magical powers, but I can't for girlboss scientists.
I went to college and got a degree in STEM. Any 200 level or above STEM class was 95%/5% men to women, and the women were far from the top of the class in any of them. And the few women who weren't washed out in college were all quickly washed out of the field in the real world. They all moved to management or into a completely different field within a couple of years. I work with EEs, MEs, CEs, and CSs and have yet to find a woman worth a shit in any of them after two decades.
I will believe pigs can fly before I will believe a woman can be the leader of her field in STEM.
it was somewhat disheartening seeing women in my science field getting full-rides to the best schools in the country simply for being a woman that somehow made it through 4yrs in undergrad. they were by no means the top in their class. while white men were told they didn't get volunteer lab experience because they weren't "diverse".
then in the real world all of the women ended up as girlboss program managers filling in excel sheets and asking simps to do their work for them (and they did).
you all have no idea how bad things are going to get. things are just going to start breaking more and more. things aren't going to get built. no one will seem to know why. the party is over. women running things spells the downfall of your civilization.
Lmfao you would Eiza Gonzalez character then. Imagine Denisse Richards James Bond character but with current era cuntboss attidude.
Edit: At least the Asian chic is somewhat believable, but Ms Resting Bitch Face Gonzalez?
What is Overseerr?
First hit on search.brave.com
Not the guy you're responding to but I just read that site several times, and still have no idea what it does. There's zero context about what requests are and how they work. Is this a torrent thing? Do random people on the internet request access to my server? Do files get downloaded or are things streamed?
It's a pretty shit site.
You seem to have mostly understood it below, but I'll clarify.
The *Arr stack are programs that are designed to facilitate piracy.
I personally run Jellyfin/Jellyseerr/Radarr/Sonarr/Prowlarr/Qbittorrent/PrivateInternetAccess. Overseerr is for Plex, and fuck paying for piracy, so I use jelly.
Jellyfin is the front-end, basically the self-hosted netflix web site that plays your movies.
Jellyseerr is a program for those too stupid to figure out torrent sites. You can just input "Batman" and select the quality, and then JellySeerr will send a request to either Radarr or Sonarr, depending if you picked a batman movie or a batman tv show.
Radarr does movies.
Sonarr does TV.
These programs then schedule a download when it gets released, or if it's already released, they pass the request down into Prowlarr.
Prowlarr logs into torrent sites for you (both public and private) and presents Sonarr/Radarr with a list of options, which they then pick which one to download based on the resolution/quality that you chose in JellySeerr. Typically you then pass that torrent file into a qbtittorrent container that has a VPN enabled network so it can safely download without the powers that be getting upset. Jellyfin watches the download folders and automatically presents new content as it comes in.
There are much more *Arr programs. Readarr for books, for example.
A good coherent example of setting this all up and leveraging a NAS to do it is at:

Thanks for the additional info. 👍
post saved for future reference
Pretty good explanation dude!
I mostly use Jellyfin to, but you only have to pay for Plex Pass if you want to "unlock" HW transcoding with Plex Pass.
You can just use regular Plex to forward the request to Overseer, all you have to do is just add the tvshow / movie to Plex's Watchlist. The Plex app is available for every device out there while Overseer is only a selfhosted webapp. Like for my parents, i just sent them up Plex on their AndroidTV device and they can request whatever the fuck they want from Plex Discover, then switch to Jellyfin to actually watch it, cause Jellyfin support HW transcoding out of the box. My $120 Intel N100 mini PC can GPU transcode several streams at once while using like 4watts total.
Yeah an example for context: I currently Shogun (2024) added in Sonarr. Sonarr fetches the media info from sites like IMDB, etc and knows how many seasons, episodes, names, and release dates are. If its in the future, It will query Prowlarr at that date ( which is already set to use certain torrent sites,, i use private ones) on a set interval until it finds it based on your search criteria, such as 4K quality) download it / unpack it if needed / move it to your media folders, which are nicely name by Sonarr.
You also download everything to a seedbox and have it securily puss the download to you. Or you can run everything on the seedbox. Most of them have n00b friendly one click install for all the *Arr suite and more, like Ultra.cc.
Looks like a plugin for Plex that will show you recommendations.
You have to really buy into Plex and have a group of users that you provide access to. Imagine you are the Plex server owner with a library of liberated content that you provide to friends and family (who run Plex clients) similar to netflix. I don't run Plex myself but I know some who do, for their parents and siblings.
@Ralt explained it pretty well above:
https://kotakuinaction2.win/p/17siJJqrTd/x/c/4ZA1LPnBKMu
But Plex already does that. I've given access to friends and family, so I'm not sure what this adds unless it's truly for finding stuff that strangers have and requesting access to it. The site just does a very poor job of explaining what it actually does.
Edit: After quite a bit more reading, it does appear to be torrent related. Radarr and Sonarr do the searching for movies and TV, and initiate the torrent downloads. Overseerr appears to be mostly a recommendation system, with the ability to queue things in those other programs when you find a recommendation you want.
And it doesn't appear to be a Plex plugin, it's a whole separate application that works with Plex and uses it for user management, but isn't really integrated.

Check @Rait post. It puts it pretty nicely.

Is part of the *arr suite, along with Sonarr and Radarr. At its core, is request management for Plex / Jellyfin.
You basically automate all the Jack Sparrowing of Movies and TVShow. Is quite a rabbit hole get down, but once setup anyone with an account ( say your mom), all she has to do is click request something and it will out and grab it based on the parameters you set.
The books have stiff writing to them that isn't the fault of the translators. I believe Liu Cixin is a computer programmer, and it shows. That's not to say the books are bad but characterization takes a back seat to the overall "ideas" the books are presenting you with.
So it's not surprising that there are swapping around characters because the characters that existed were already superfluous.
However I think they are doing more to set up later seasons, what would be the second and third books, because Three Body Problem as a first book is really more of a prologue for what's to come.
A quick wiki look has this
Wiki link to the Chinese series (which I'd watch with subs over any NF drivel if I were inclined)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-Body
So yes, the DEIty of woke, hollyflix is responsible for the junk you are seeing.
Edit: Just read the wiki plot on the Chinese novel. Hilarious. Imp would have loved it.
Realistic.
it's a netflix adaptation of a chinese story. why are you even giving it consideration?
It is utterly stupid, plot makes no sense, united colors of beneton in a gay disco. Everyone is a straight up redditor, magical minorities doing magical science. The only white man is competent, but ruthless (called fascist by the magical science girlboss). The other white man is wimpy loser, that sacrifices his life (typical jewish trope of whites' only salvation is in sacrificing their life for women and minorities). QAnon mentioned, climate change mentioned. Only cool bit was going first resident evil movie laser grid on a whole freighter ship for reasons that make no goddamn sense, though with CGI somehow worse than the first resident evil movie. Total fucking slop, insult to everyone that isn't a weed-lobotomized reddit shitlib, and this is how the average cultural output will look like for forseeable future
Starts off well, then kind of falls flat. The novels are more towards hard science fiction and the point is to think about how the implications of many scientific theories are playing out or could play out at different levels, centered around some mystery elements like some physicists committing suicide for reasons unknown. It’s very good.
The Netflix version is a bag of skittles that mostly shuffles random elements around from the various plot points of the novels. It clearly has no idea why people liked the novels or what made them unique. It’s also not very well made or well acted in most cases. I was surprised they had the balls to show a black guy smoking too much pot and criticize him for it.
Novels are worth reading. The Netflix version had potential but they fumble pretty hard as they go. I don’t personally care about it being in the UK and merely having it start in China, but it seems like it’d have been a slam dunk for diversity quotas to just make everybody Chinese.
Must be why they get desperate enough to rely on women. Anyone who knows their ass from a hole in the ground must have offed themselves.
If it makes you feel any better one of the first to off herself’s a girl.
For what it's worth, it's quite true to the books so far. I don't remember the races and genders of original characters but key concepts and events have been covered well.
You don’t remember everyone being Chinese?
Only in the beginning, it went global quite quickly.
It wasn't that bad. It has a lot of Asians, but it's a story out of China so big deal.
There's implicit woke, but nothing explicitly woke and humanity would be over without the old white guy, who is a total badass. The security guy does have a gay son, but perhaps not intentionally he's whiny and unsympathetic, the biggest failure in season 1 is caused by the pouty woke woman.
These directors are okay at telling somebody else's story, they just have no creative bones in their body. Others have said it's faithful to the books and I believe it because putting in some woke subplot would be too much effort for them.
The Chinese version is on torrents and was well done, but spoken Chinese just grates on my nerves so I stopped after a few episodes. If it was dubbed I would watch it instead.
I always wonder how GOT would’ve ended up had George finished the dang books
I have the books but haven’t read them yet but I assume that it is required to inject certain things into the story even if it doesn’t make any sense
