Fan translators should have been picked for this jobs. But as usual the higher up are mega retarded.

corpos would atleast get their bucks worth since people would 'actually' buy the official version instead of pirating it with the fan translation/mtl.

Speaking of that, are there sites that do fan translations? I’ve been wanting to add fan translated subs to my anime for awhile, but I’ve been stuck with whatever crunchyroll has or other official bullshit for awhile.

Good, I support anything that hurts localizers no matter what the outcome is beyond that.

I really don't want to agree with you...but they brought this on themselves.

It's pretty sad when "burn it all down, possibly forever" is considered a far better course of action over letting the status quo continue on. And I don't disagree with that assessment, it's just sad that the current status quo is that bad.

If they can find one that wasn't programmed with a leftoid agenda, it'd still be preferable to the pack of creeps that do the job right now.

As a test, I tried translating "I no longer keep track of my kills, I am a tool merely for my master's use." into Japanese, and then back into English, to hopefully approximate AI's translation, which I will then compare with what the localizers did in Fire Emblem to a very similarly spirited speech made by a ninja:

Machine Translation: "I don't keep a record of my killings anymore, I'm just a tool for my master to use."

Actual Highly Paid Left-wingnut Localizer Translation: "..." "..." "..." "..." "..."

So, you know, hmm, hard to judgement call it, but I'd say the machine translation MIGHT get across the gist of the message a bit clearer than what those propagandizing SJWs do.

I mean, we know what is meant by "killings" "..." is just lazy

It's not lazy, it's the localizers dogshit attempt at humour. I'd be MUCH happier if the issue with localizers was laziness, but it's not. The issue is that they're dumbasses that continually make changes because they arrogantly think they know better, not realising that if they did know better, they'd be writers and not localizers.

"You should show respect to your superiors." (machine translation) was translated into English as (by the localizers) "You're one of those GamerGate Freakshows, aren't you?".

The point of the conversation isn't "The Machine-God Hath Spoken, All Praise The Machine-God!", it's "Fuck it, machine translating everything then just giving it a once-over for legibility is 99% chance better than what they're actively doing right now."

The exact line was "Do you have a stick up your ass? Or are you just one of those dumbass Gamergate freakshows?"

The anime was Prison School.

The backlash was so bad that they re-dubbed the line to something more accurate for the disc release, but AFAIK, the original dub line can still be heard on Crunchyroll.

I understand how. Because we have labor racketeering in our country, and it's actively supported by fully half the political spectrum.

It is, very literally, better to just put an end to their entire profession by automating them away, than to dig through all the shit hoping to find a good one.

I downvote you not because of your lame generalization of AI but because you indirectly defend the localizers. AI is a means to make them suffer and would not have been implemented were it not for localizers being shit at their job. You earned those downvotes.

Fan "translators" have been using machine translation and passing it off as a real translation for almost a decade while e-begging for money for the "work" they do. It's pathetic.

I thought "encoding" was the new fad. Where they just do bullshit with compression and pretend they're doing anything beyond just ripping streams from crunchyroll.

Yeah there is this weird sense of entitlement they people have where they think that just by modifying someone else's work slightly it's now their own. The worse behavior i see is in the manga and light novel fan translation scene where people seem to hold "claim" over a series to translate (that they don't own rights to) and will get super bitchy if someone "steals" it (probably because it makes them money). Some translators will even post advance chapters on their site or on patreon and then charge money to view it. And then its just machine translated garbage where they didn't even fix any of it to be readable. Then they will leave a story on a cliffhanger chapter deliberately and pretend to be busy to try and bait donations to do the chapter "early" which they then release immediately after as if it was already done beforehand. Sometime in the last 10 years or so, the fan translation scene became commercialized behind the scenes and now its become a scummy illegal business run by a bunch of people who clearly don't speak English. It's become the exact same thing it claims to be against.

Considering most of the time the series getting Machine Translated would go untranslated otherwise, I can at least appreciate their work if they put something into it on top of it. Because scanlating isn't just raw translation, there is a lot of effort put into formatting, redrawing, and cleaning up Japan's weird grammar. Something that anyone whose seen a zero effort MTX can see the difference in.

I won't give them money, but I can still appreciate that most of the time it was that or the work never seeing the light of the day at all.

Now "sniping", especially in regards to MTX, is the real pathetic baby shit.

I too appreciate a well edited MTL because even if its MTL'd if the person editing it is fluent in English they can at least go over the output and realize where things don't make sense and fix it. However, the problem with this is two-fold.

One is that for the vast majority of MTL the fan translator puts in a minimal amount of effort so its unreadble garbage more often than not. Often times the mistakes are so insanely obvious you wonder if they proofread it at all before hitting upload.

The other problem is that by putting out a half assed chapter, that chapter will now be shitty for the rest of time because even if a more decent translator picks up a series down the road, they will often not go back and fix the hot mess that the other translator left the earlier chapters in, because its considered bad manners to "snipe" as you said. in fact many places like novelupdates enforce a retarded no sniping policy.

I recall a decade ago or so it was the wild west when it came to translations but somewhere along the way they realized it could be monitized out the ass with almost 0 effort and they somehow made it like a soulless corporate machine, complete with the corporate greed, but somehow without the corporation.

Right, those are issues for sure. But as someone who reads really obscure shit (thanks JUM for everything you do!), often times its absolutely never going to have any other option, so I can compromise in that regard.

And one silver lining is, that if its bad enough both those problems will be rectified because its still a fan run community, at least for bigger series. For example, a few years back the manga for Jashin Dropkick was releasing at a snail's pace and was something like 200+ chapters behind the raws. So a guy just released the bottom barrel MTX at a rate of a new chapter every 20 minutes, and got caught up within a few weeks.

It being so bad made people pick it up to keep pumping out half decent quality works for those who were patient enough, and for those who wanted to be caught up with Japan for spoilers (what little there could be) they now were up to date and just needed a second scanlator to jump in at the further place.

But maybe the situation is worse than I think, due to my aforementioned mostly only obscure reading habits. I rarely run into any groups who are big on monetization or any of the problems you laid out (other than the retarded sniping shit). The only time I saw it was Jamini's Box with Kaguya, who were so hated that when they shut down it became a meme for everyone to scanlate the next chapter to celebrate their death, which is why chapter 200 has dozens of versions.

Yay, does this mean we get releases online faster for us non Japanese speakers?

And please apply this to books, having to wait months for translations of Overlord can be frustrating..
