YouTube disables the front page without history enabled. (media.scored.co)

I don't understand the logic behind this. Yes, if the history is turned off, they can't tailor recommendations for you. Doesn't that give them carte blanche to just serve up whatever they want, like some kind of default profile of trends/propaganda? Haven't they already been doing that?

They probably just don't do much to enable users who turn off history. Either there aren't enough of them, or they are users they don't like.

Actually it sounds like the opposite.

The frontpage has always been chock full of propaganda channels that they push. Fun fact: here in Germany (probably all of Europe and I think Canada enacted a similar law) they even have to push state-run media channels by law.

The recommendations in the sidebar have always been more in line with what you actually watch (although on rare occasions they still sneak some late night propagandist in there).

None of this is true.

I got banned from all YouTube comment sections for telling the truth before I knew Reddit existed. Not sure if that was 2018? After DJT got elected anyway.

I get related videos based on what I've watched anyway. Perhaps more random stuff than if I had an account to log in to, but it's still pretty personalized.

I can't watch an age restricted video, which I find hilarious.

I just tested their homepage just to see. This was in the top 5:

What Yuri Bezmenov didn't tell you.

They know what I've been watching! Lol.

Been like that a while. Bookmark the Subscriptions page as your youtube homepage instead.

That's what I've been doing for over 10 years.

Its been like that forever. I know because I have mine turned off for many years now.

I'm more concerned at you actually wanting them to give you a non-"personalized" front page. That's even more propaganda and cancer than you'd normally get because they'd be serving up the most normie basic shit like John Oliver.

Nah, this is new. I don't use Youtube with an account and I used to get the usual frontpage. Now all I get is a blank page with a search bar and error message.

Kinds seems like a bug.

I think the bug is that some people didn't have it until now, because mine has looked like that for at least 2 years that I can remember. Which makes sense with all their rampant anti-adblock coding they have been up to that stuff that Just Worked until now would change.

Wait till you hear that they started introducing "high-def only for premium users".

Yea, that's a thing now. Not sidewide but I've seen at least one video where "high-bitrate 1080p" was premium-only.

Shit's circling down the drain hard these days on Youtube.

Alternatives with a functional search feature would be nice. What's best?

I'm more surprised they didn't record history and just used it like Google used physical location data even after turning off location services.

I've always just assumed that turning off history means turning off their display of it. They still have their server logs. There's no way for me to know what they've kept, so I just have to assume they have a record.

Turning off the display of history can be useful in itself.

Google has a record of literally every piece of data that they have ever been exposed to. They log everything and will keep it forever.

Yes, that is what I assume. I don't see why you wouldn't unless you just ran out of HD space. Which doesn't seem like a problem for them.

If the NSA can record most of internet traffic, then Google can definitely store everything that comes their way.

That's nice of them, I thought you needed an extension for that!

Freetube and chill is all I can say to this. I only ever learned of the adblock thing because people talked about it, same with this. I cannot comment anymore but honestly don't really miss it. Privacy redirect to automatically open in freetube, too and you don't even have to interact with youtubes page. Fuck em
