It's more than just the phone. I think the issue is that so many people are no longer on the same page when it comes to life interests, values or almost anything. The phone correlates with an escape for people to an area where they can find people who share what is important to them. People would probably have more care for what's going on around them if they felt the people doing things around them had a care for them but most don't. People get more enjoyment from what's going on in the phones than the people around them. This includes family too and sometimes more especially family.
Agreed. It would be one thing if we lived in a small town or village where everybody knew everybody else. Or even a nation of shared values like Christiandom. As is, the phone is an escape from the present. It is the replacement for the tv, radio and newspapers of not so long ago.
Damn, I had a long post and deleted it by mistake. In short though, the government has to negotiate with corporations that have the skills to access the resources Argentina has in a manner that works to the advantage of the people of Argentina but that means government involvement not less government involvement. You'd want a joint venture perhaps, capital controls to ensure reinvestment, subsidies to make it profitable, etc... this is where it gets tricky though because the government can negotiate deals that are good for foreign corps and bad for the people. I wouldn't be shocked if the jews come away richer but not necessarily everyone else, not to mention the potential cultural destruction that can be wrought as well. The USA is rich but at what cost to the culture? I think most people would be prefer being poorer if they got video games without blue haired tranny feminists making the video games.
I hear you, brother. I've found I'm more mindful in general when I create dedicated times where I don't use my phone at all. I think phone hygiene like that can be beneficial for many reasons, including for the sake of relationship quality.
I'm a big fan of stacking phones into a tower when at a table for a meal. You can start there, shaming people for touching the stack during the meal. After you've conditioned a 'phones down' behavior, you can expand the application of it.
You can't really wake someone up by calling them out. That will just put them on the defensive. You can however nudge them into it by pointing out to them the actions of someone else. Seeing themself from an outside perspective might give them that spark of self reflection. If not... well, not everyone is built for inward thinking.
When I hear my friends and family talking about their "feed", I am appalled. They are apparently fed ideas by these devices, and happily devour them. Their thinking and behavior can be nudged and guided with surgical precision.
In regards to people hunched over their phones, it's quite disturbing. Those things might as well be a soul-vacuum.
I had to get rid of my phone back in I wanna say 2013 or so. I realized that I was on my phone more than I was off my phone. And I sat back and realized everything I was missing out on by being absorbed in my own little world, while I exist in another one. The real one.
So I just cold turkey dropped it. When the contract ran out mid 2013, I never renewed and I honestly don't miss it. At first I definitely did. Not going to lie there. Took a few weeks to pull myself out of the cell phone habits I had picked up.
I have an old fashioned land line, and I make and get calls that way, and that's fine. I realized I don't actually miss it anymore, and I think I'm better off without it.
It's an escape from reality. A big problem with it is people are mistaking the online for real life, and a lot of that is down to how addictive things on them become.
What's funny is when you concentrate on a single thing, without the distractions of a phone, TV or whatever, you'll find yourself taking much more pleasure in the task and a job well done. You'll lose track of time, in a good way, and be achieving tangible results rather than imaginary numbers on a server somewhere that don't actually matter.
I remember a few years after WiFi became available chatting with a friend over AIM and him mentioning he was in the bathroom with his laptop. That was the first time I'd even considered that sort of thing a possibility.
A couple years later friends got into the habit of AIM chatting with each other while in the same room, which I didn't like because why wouldn't you just talk to each other you're in the same room for god's sake.
Nowadays I find it difficult to just sit down and watch a movie uninterrupted without also fucking around on my computer. So it's not just a phone thing. OTOH hand for a programming project I can sit down and work on it for 10+ hours to the point where I forget to turn the light on when it gets dark. So it's not a "destroyed concentration" thing either.
What I have learned is that most people need someone else to create for them. They want to look at art, read a book, have the news fed to them, and tell someone else's joke. Those who do their own creations take time away from everything and just think of creations.
I'm still furious with my parents for purchasing a smart phone for my sister years ago. She was already stuck on tumblr and using it to hide from the world and the smart phone just dialed that up to eleven. I've been explicitly clear with them that I consider it no different from them getting her hooked on heroin.
You must be young if you just started to notice this. Well, welcome to the club. It's all downhill from here. The best you can do now if apply your awakening to your own principles and catch yourself if you ever feel you're falling for the same trap, because no one is immune to complacency. Also, stay the fuck away from social media. That's specifically what draws people in. The endless feed and shorts... It's like a bottomless bag of potato chips that saps you of original thought. Just video after video of some asshole's take on a political event, rather than actually looking into what actually happened yourself.
It's true, I'm in university and nearly everyone is using their phones all the time. The only concern for me is that people don't want to form relationships with others because the phone is comforting and not strange at first. It sucks.
I got a "dumb phone" back when 3G shut down. It's a buggy, clunky piece of shit. It was also the only one supported by my carrier. I'm not sure they make good dumb phones any more.
They don't. I got pushed off my 3G slide phone when 4G became the minimum standard. I wound up on a feature-locked 4G phone, which is what passes for a dumb-phone these days. I'm quite sure it has all the 4G tracking, so it lives on my desk 90% of the time.
I switched to a Sunbeam when they finally pulled the 3G network out from under me and forced me off my 15+ year flip old phone. It's done alright by me, though it isn't as durable as the old flip phones.

At the risk of being accused of main character syndrome, I think this must be a reply to my question here. But interesting read either way.
Oh, you're right but at least you found the post anyway.

I've heard of the "first one to touch it pays for everyone" tactic.
I like the way you think!
I would eat free forever.

I'll take the entire knowledge of mankind at my fingertips over direct contact with clown world NPCs every time.
I'm also happily without a phone.

Omg look at this CRAAZZYY conspiracy theorist over here guys.
Tell me more about all us SHEEPLE and how stupid you think we are. ;)
I'm not sure what you're on about.
Enjoy your (social) media feed!

If you're not into shitty social media, shitty propaganda, and shitty mobile games, there's nothing there for you.
"But I just like cute cat videos, my tiktok is all cute cat videos."
"Can't you just google 'cute cat videos' and look at all the videos you want whenever you want?"
"No I need to follow a feed of the cutest cats every day."
Obviously there's music, podcasts, productivity, learning, and business/banking tools but those aren't what's capturing everyone's attention 24/7.
