I am a firm believer in download once, watch forever. I own physical media only for titles I want to support with my money.
Everything else, I sail the high seas.
Sail the high seas on shit you own because he's right the service is worse when you're paying legally anyway. The joke is we can see they are more than capable of implementing a worthwhile service, they deliberately choose not to.
If I can't rip it myself I download a copy.
Louis Rossman, escapee from NY, talks about his experience trying Netflix and finding out that the '4k streaming' only happens inside the closed source app that connects his smart TV's microphone to the internet.
Piracy is the superior product & experience.
(He also muses about a music exec at the end, "when people won't even pirate your stuff, you're in trouble." lol. yep.)
20 min vid could have been 5 min long.
Stop talking already.
I'm convinced the only people who would earnestly try to shame you over piracy are literal NPCs and we've seen how employees etc. of these companies really are infiltrating comments pages trying to stir the pot.
My radical take on this is, okay, you want me to pay for the content? Fine, but I'm taking my fucking copy as is without any of your shitty DRM latched onto it like a fucking headcrab and I'm going to enjoy it offline whenever I want. I mean, a great example is just recently when we were talking on this site about Mortal Kombat and how they're erasing certain versions from the internet and trying to make you buy the more modern shitty version. They're making fans of the game who already legally own a copy of an older game pay for essentially the same game twice.
Total War Warhammer did this with me when it came to 1 and 2 and CA were being so fucking cheeky in my view trying to make me to pay for 3 just to access immortal empires. Meanwhile the new customers who came along buying Warhammer 3 for the first time buy it and they can play the entire campaign for fucking free and to me as a long time customer that's just outrageous. There's a growing number of these such cases where media companies are all just acting like straight up rip off merchants. Again, bear in mind I'm somebody who actually enjoyed playing Total War games in the past and supported them, fucking fat chance of that now especially with them going woke on top of it.
Oy vey being able to use the thing you pay for is literal theft! you need to be dependent!
During the disastrous Warcraft III Reforged fiasco, the Battle.net launcher downloaded the remake version over top of the classic version of the game on people's computers, erasing it forever. You couldn't download the old version anymore, you had to manually reinstall it with the CDs (hope you still have them!).
I'm not asking people to feel ashamed about piracy, I am asking people to stop fucking talking about it, making it more visible, and ruining it for the rest of us when they clamp down harder on it. Too many people are treating it like a badge of honor they need to tell the whole world about, bringing more unwanted attention to it in the process.
I had a big DVD collection back in 2007. I sold almost all my DVDs at yard sales and swap meets.
And now here I am again, rebuying the DVDs I really want for movies and TV shows because streaming services either stopped streaming the show or movie I like, or it was put on another streaming service.
And then that service stopped streaming it too.
It's back to having a small wall in the living room of DVDs and Blu ray again. But I don't care. I realized I was better off in 2007 than I am now. I could just take it, put it in the player and watch it whenever I wanted. Even if that was only a few times a year. They couldn't take it away if it was in my hand.
Or edit out scenes they find objectionable, and other various reasons to own physical media.
“edit out scenes they find objectionable”
The way things are going with AI and deep fakes, I fully expect them to start ADDING IN woke horse shit to all the classics very shortly. Make it so that Drew Barrymore actually saves ET, give Princess Leia a cringey lightsaber duel or two, have Adrian tell Rocky that Apollo deserves the title more because he’s suffered institutional racism etc.
Honestly it’s going to be a leftist commie’s wet dream 🤦🏼
Fuck, I didn't think of this but you're right. The "remastered" Star wars was the start of that.
Take my hate upvote.
I remember feeling this way with anime, especially after learning how Crunchyroll doesn't do jack shit to support the studios. if I were an animation studio, or a film studio, I would just set up a tip jar where fans can pony up money and tag their donation with the show or movie that made them decide to donate. Then we can all be sailing the high seas while supporting the creators.
Things like netflix and microsoft game pass is communism. Use popular shit to subsidize and fund dumb woke shit.
piracy is a moral obligation, but if you really like the content do support the creator either through direct donations or by buying their merch, since platforms for their content usually take a big fat undeserved cut from every purchase
Someone please tell him that pirating and fishing are different things
So....where does anyone find their wares nowadays? You know, for ethical reasons. Already gave valve enough $$$, but I still need their launcher (unless a 'source port' is available, like dhewm3).
I should be able to take my games with me across operating systems and computers.
