I could jump on the bandwagon here but that's low hanging fruit. What the fuck is ANYONE doing to get this old, probably senile man OFF THE FUCKING TRACKS instead of calling the police and waiting for them to turn up and only have 24 seconds to respond?!
Even with a fit man turning up that's a tight time frame to do that and notice how a guy shows up AFTER the old man's legs have been smashed by the train. No one willing to be responsible and help those vulnerable, nah someone else can deal with it fucking sickening.
So? Push his chair off the track, turn it off and wait for police to show up while there's no risk of traumatising a poor train driver.
That's one of the things I hate about these, for lack of better words, attention seeking suicides. For them it's probably over quick but they traumatise the driver and the people that have to clean up the mess after.
I'm simply saying that it's possible, or even probable, that this dude was actively resisting being moved off the track.
Honestly, If I was driving along and I just saw a dude in a wheelchair stopped on a track, I don't think I would stop.
And yes, suicide, public suicide, suicide by cop, etc., is awful and self-centered. Literally the easy way out while leaving others to pick up the pieces.
I knew a guy once who was part of a cleanup service that came in after fires, suicide, old person corpse rotting in an apartment for 2 months, that kind of shit. He said the deathfats were by far the worst, but after that, shotgun suicide. He also didn't seem that bothered by any of it. I guess after you've seen enough... He was an odd duck.
You have to be in that field of work, it's why you have to warn some people out of certain professions because they mentally cannot cope with that kind of work.
First thing that comes into my mind is veterinarians, too many people think 'I get to look after all the cute animals' not realising your job is to deal with them when they are weak and sick usually...
Worst part of being a vet is the owners who come in demanding a pet be euthanized because it is “inconvenient”, or because of a fairly minor behavioral problem, and who aren’t willing to re-home said pet…
And then it becomes ethically murky, because yes, in some cases you can refuse, but then the dogshit owner can just “shop around” and find another vet who will do the deed…
I’m not talking “mercy kills” here, either - I’m talking selfish-ass pet owners who do this shit, all the damn time…
That, in fact, is pretty much why I decided not to be a vet.
So I agree, but it goes even beyond just that, into the territory of “Fuck, aren’t humans terrible?”
Yeah, agreed, that is some f*ed up stuff. I am 100% aware I could never be a vet.
We had to have an elderly and paralyzed dog put down a year or two ago. It was a hard decision as I had literally been carrying her inside and outside, upstairs and downstairs for about a year. She had a healthy appetite, but as her movement became more and more limited, she lost all quality of life, and was becoming a nervous wreck (constant barking, etc.).
They have euthanasia vets now who do housecalls, and that's what we did. This was news to me, maybe it's always been a thing.
The person who did it was very professional, but I remember thinking at the time, I couldn't understand the mentality to get into that line of work! Constantly going into people's homes and, ngl, I was sobbing my eyes out by the end.
The vet was so caring and good with our dog. I asked how she ended up in that line of work, and she said the pay was good, hours were very flexible, and she didn't have to have an office.

I wonder what their stances on abortion are if this is how they treated their fur babies.
Yeah, even I, as one of those, have thought very clearly about ensuring that, if I did ever do it, I would leave as little mess, and as little trauma, as possible…
Still awful, of course, but… I would try to minimize the direct “impact”, in this sense.
Trouble is, though, ensuring lethality, which is why… The shotgun route is so popular.
After seeing what’s going on in my area after new train started running I’m inclined to believe this. Three homeless people threw themselves in front of a train, another homeless man was clipped by one, and a lady “broke down” on the tracks with her less than a year old daughter in the car. We didn’t even have this train running for a year.
I watch a ton of body cam videos and female cops are ... sad. Over the years there were maybe 1 or 2 female cops who kept up with their male colleagues in physical situations. The rest are glorified wet noodles.
IMHO even mentally stressful situations are sketchy. Both men and women get panic attacks in shitty situations but it seems men delay the breakdown until the adrenaline rush is over and the immediate danger is resolved. Women seem to tend to break down right then and there.
My favorite is the one where the female cop is unable to subdue a developmentally disabled 40 year old man, so she tries to shoot him. She misses, and hits his mom instead.
Yeah good on her actually, remember those fuckwits in Colorado who parked their police car ON the tracks, then locked someone in it? And distinctly did not run over to try to open the door in time.
I don't think women should be cops except in a few distinct roles. We might need a few in the office for interviews and councilling of women and that. But beyond that, no.
But at least this one did the right thing and saved his life if not leg?
It's hard to overestimate how stupid some old timers can get once they start getting senile/sick. Once they get bad enough they're like toddlers for how often they nearly kill themselves over the dumbest distractions.
Man, I seriously cannot tell if over a decade in medicine has utterly desensitized me, if living in a former soviet union territory has selected for a population that is born out of fucks to give, or if you folks are wimps.
I rewound this video a few times to confirm events, didn't bat an eye.
I've seen this before and my conclusion is the opposite of what you're supposed to think here.
That guy looks like he's trying to commit suicide. He's not stuck on one half of the track or the other, he's deliberately squarely in the middle where the train will take him out in an instant. He's doing this deliberately. He's in a wheelchair, he probably has other health issues, there's no hope for him and he wants to end the charade.
The female cop shows up - won't let him do what he wants to do - and does in such a way that he neither gets a quick clean release of death, but also cuts his legs off.
I don't think there's a more fitting analogy for the bad side of women.
"I'm in a wheelchair, I'm in pain all the time, there's no hope for me.
"I want to go right now, not after suffering through constant pain for years.
"Finally, and end.
Woman: You're not ALLOWED to die, I'm stopping you - and getting your legs cut off in the process leaving you worse off than you were before.
Woman: I'm a hero!
I'm not so sure it's clear he was trying to kill himself. He didn't protest the cop trying to save him, but he also barely reacted to having his legs ripped off.
He just seemed confused and barely aware, it's possible he's just deep in the later stages of dementia and had no idea what he was doing.
There are plenty of cleaner ways don't don't fuck up someone else's life. You have no right to impose that on the driver. Jumping in front of trains or traffic is evil, you have no right to do it. Pulling him from the tracks is absolutely the right thing to do. As incredibly selfish and evil as suicide already is, dragging others into it is even worse.
She saved the driver from having been involved in a suicide. Good on her.
I don't know man that was really damn close I'd probably have resolved to just yank him from the chair too and hope for the best instead of pushing and very easily getting myself or both of us hit in the process
I don't know about these bikes but can the wheels lock? And if the notions it was an attempted suicide are to be believed it paints a picture of color
Old Dude: I am stuck in this wheel chair for the rest of my miserable life. My wife left me and I am all alone and broken. I just want to end it all. Let me just sit here with my back to the train. It will all be over soon, thank God!
Police: Oh no you don't! You will spend the rest of your (now) very long miserable life in a wheelchair AND in an insane asylum. Also, here's a summons for violating Code 6, subsection 2.3 - wheeled vehicles in an unauthorized area.
I could jump on the bandwagon here but that's low hanging fruit. What the fuck is ANYONE doing to get this old, probably senile man OFF THE FUCKING TRACKS instead of calling the police and waiting for them to turn up and only have 24 seconds to respond?!

He could have been attempting suicide and refusing help.
So? Push his chair off the track, turn it off and wait for police to show up while there's no risk of traumatising a poor train driver.

How incredibly morbid.

Could it be that the old man called the police himself?
We don' know what happened before this, but I coulda lifted that guy off the tracks if his chair wouldn't roll for some reason.
I watch a ton of body cam videos and female cops are ... sad. Over the years there were maybe 1 or 2 female cops who kept up with their male colleagues in physical situations. The rest are glorified wet noodles.

To be fair... it DID solve the immediate problem. They build those tasers much stronger than they used to, though.
My favorite is the one where the female cop is unable to subdue a developmentally disabled 40 year old man, so she tries to shoot him. She misses, and hits his mom instead.

I wouldn’t blame the cop at all. Guy wanted to kill himself?
Maybe he did, but it's not sure.
It's hard to overestimate how stupid some old timers can get once they start getting senile/sick. Once they get bad enough they're like toddlers for how often they nearly kill themselves over the dumbest distractions.
I feel like… You need to “NSFW” this.
I never want to watch that again. 😔
Yes. Ugh.
Man, I seriously cannot tell if over a decade in medicine has utterly desensitized me, if living in a former soviet union territory has selected for a population that is born out of fucks to give, or if you folks are wimps.
I rewound this video a few times to confirm events, didn't bat an eye.
Eh, it's hardly gorey at all as internet videos go, especially with the blurring.
I guess it's more just the concept that's freaking people out, because you can see way worse on HBO, except you know it's not real.
I've seen this before and my conclusion is the opposite of what you're supposed to think here.

Or moving a human being. Dragging induces friction, and it's damned hard to drag a full-grown man at speed.
He was a standard case of not being there fast enough. Whoever called this in and didn't go to help him themselves is an evil monster.
