This was an actual line from Dr. Stone's Funimation dub. I'm stunned it never became a meme due to how self-unaware the writer was. (files.catbox.moe)

I used to subscribe to Funimation's website and streaming service. Used to, years ago.

That's why the watermark's there. I got this straight from the player.

I kept this screengrab around for years because I couldn't believe it was real.

But it is, the main character spoke it.

Nope. But you are just missing out on the good stuff for years.

Most of the best Japanese Animation is released only in Japanese until it is clearly a hit; then the license is sold to another company for international distribution. Unless there the release is widely anticipated (following smash hit manga sales or a huge director) then there is a time lag of years. Some good stuff never even gets an English language release.

A real weeb wants the good stuff as soon as they can get it, and they want the original, funny jokes rather than the shitty translated jokes.

The standards of Japanese voice artists are very high, and a lot of that comes through as comic timing and excellent character voice.

You can watch all the dubs you want. You are waiting for Funimation (or whoever) to tell you what you should watch. You are just not a weeb.

Let me put this out there. The only subs I’ll ever watch are ones not released in the US and if they are released in the US, and no dub, then it has to be fan translated. I don’t fuck around with that funimation or crunchy roll nonsense.

Now don’t expect me to pick up on all of that niche weeb bullshit because nobody else knows about it. I’m not a fuckin hipster. If it looks badass and other people are talking about it then I’m checking it out. I don’t have enough time in the day to work, take care of my kids, play my PS1/PS2 games, and watch some anime. It’s already bad enough I got a large backlog of anime in my Plex library.

So you can miss me with that weeb title. I don’t need it.

The release calendar for the year is kept up to date at sites like https://myanimelist.net/

It isn't that hard to keep up to date on the genre and quality of an expected release.

Everything worth watching gets fan subs.

I am not going to tell you how to enjoy your hobby, but it is not a huge effort to check the buzz and watch a show on a streaming site. It is about as hard as watching Netflix.

On top of that some dubs some really stupid and ruin the original character Like listen to what the character in purple sounds like in the English version verses the Japanese version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HjTT4QncZM&ab_channel=YugaOhdo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCWuL9_LjdA&ab_channel=PanMan

Its night and day and the English dub sounds stupid. He sounds cool in the Japanese version but i couldnt take the English dub seriously. Actually the entirety of Yugioh Arc V dub was kinda a mess

I exclusively watch dubs. I’m the laziest motherfucker alive and Korean dramas have conditioned me to accept absurdly bad voice acting.

Gotta love it when lefties go so far, they accidentally loop around into looking like they've attained self-awareness. Guess it shows Dr. Stone isn't that big a hit, because you're dead on about it being meme worthy.

I really, really like Dr. Stone, and wish it had been more successful.

But whenever I hear an unfitting line that was clearly put in by Americans, I think back to this.

Which is also why I completely understand why so many here would rather stick to the subtitled versions of anime. I get it, believe me. But I'm just not that fast a reader--it was hard for me to watch, say, Bakemonogatari and all related series because of how quickly words and their translations flashed onscreen.

Bakemonogatari and all related series because of how quickly words and their translations flashed onscreen.

Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei once had an entire episode with two completely ongoing plotlines, in which two different characters are speaking for most of it in completely unrelated directions. Which was subbed by having lines on the top and bottom of the screen the entire duration.

So, just know it can get so much worse.

Yeah, I've heard that show is reeeeeally hard to follow. The wordplay is basically untranslatable.

Its not as bad as its reputation would have you believe (though I only watched the original two seasons), unless you are obsessed with getting every single joke. Because its filled with freeze frame bonuses that are literally impossible to read normally and references to things that are obscure even in Japan.

But the show basically has no continuity after the first half of the first season introducing the characters (and the big twist near the end), so its not like you miss much if you don't get something.

This type of show is made specifically to maximize re-watch potential. You keep getting more from every watching.

It is a high risk play, but it can pay off if they get it right.

And Cyberpunk Edgerunners mimics the game's communication UI at times, so you have sci-fi comms subs on the left and right, and main dialogue at the bottom. It will often switch from left to right, as I recall. I found that to be a pain to follow.

Its ironic even, because during the brief time I was watching Dr Stone it was always just right there on the line between "Science is so fucking cool" fun times and "I fucking love Science" tier commentary on how dumb people are who don't immediately worship it.

Granted, I didn't get past like the first 10 episodes so that could be wildly offbase to its intentions.

I thought it was great in its goal of getting the target audience (young boys) interested in the sciences. And it's compelling in how it gets you to wonder how its world works and how much has changed in the last 3,700 years.

Seriously, as mentioned above, I love the series.

Always funny when Funimation used to do this, they always chose the most jarring animes to try it with, like complaining about make gaze using the character with the biggest tits in the show and frequently wearing not much at all.

Now that Funimation is no longer around, I haven't noticed the same kinda issues Crunchyroll, granted I hardly watch dubs (I'm tempted with Tomo-chan just because the VA for Carol is the sane for eng and Japanese) though seeing how they heavily pushed that they had Chainsaw man and that Eminence in shadow game, they might be more focused on money (thank god).

That's...what I said.

Whoever wrote this dub line never self-reflected on what Funimation was doing to other dubs, like Prison School's reference to Gamergate.

Accidentally creating a great anti-woke line.
