Waffle Houses tend to be (but not always) in poor or low class areas.
They are usually 24 hours as well.
So you have bunch of poor or low class people leaving the nights clubs/bars drunk at 3 to 5AM, so Waffle House is the only open for them that serves warm food and coffee.
Same type of hood shit happens at any McDonald's/IHOP/Steak&Shake open in the same areas at the same times. Waffle House Corporate is willing to keep their establishments open during those time, while a McDonald's will open the drive through and IHOP/Steak & Shake will close the bad stores.
Yeah, I noticed that even though all the McDonald's locations are 24/7 in my area they close the lobby at 10 or 11 every night even in nicer locations, probably for this reason. No one looking to hang out in a restaurant at 3 in the morning is going to act like a civilized human being.
I got that advice in the Air Force (nothing good happens after 2am) and that has proven to be solid wisdom. Unfortunately a few times in my youth I learned that lesson the hard way.
Depends on the population demographics around the Waffle House. There’s also a Burger King or McDonald’s in Detroit that’s notorious for gang shootings.
I'm just wondering if I travel to the US (not likely currently as not getting the fucking jab) if I can plan my journey by how many incidents happen at that area's Waffle House lol
I wouldn't be shocked if in the wrong area Waffle House is like that, but any low end 24 hour establishment in those areas would be. That's just what happens when you continue to allow and encourage ape outs.
but any low end 24 hour establishment in those areas would be.
Yeah, that's the trick. Waffle House isn't uniquely bizarre and violent, it's just one of many. In my area growing up it was Denny's. Holy shit, be careful in Denny's at night...someone's getting stabbed. Doesn't even matter if it's a nice area during the day, the crazies and gangsters come out at night.
Because of their roots in the hurricane prone south, Waffle House corporate is willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure that if the map says they're there, they're there. If it is physically possible to sell food, they will do so. Even if that means bringing in reefer trucks, tankers of LP, and in the worst case scenario, RV's converted into kitchens. Their logistics system can be up and selling crummy breakfast food faster than the National Guard can show up with MREs.
No electricity knocks out the dishwasher, and over a longer period of time, refrigeration. In a no power situation, they can switch to manual dishwashing for critical kitchenware and use disposable servingware. They have a no refrigeration case as well, but that shouldn't ever happen because after some period of time without power they call for a refrigeration truck. Obviously, no electricity usually knocks out non-cash payment, but I believe they have square over mobile as a backup option.
No Clean Water
Knocks out dishwashing entirely, and forces them to go to bottled water for cooking; anything involving batter tends to be knocked out by no water because they can't wash stuff. They can still operate the griddle.
No Gas
No gas knocks out the griddle, although this situation is extremely rare because every Waffle House has piping to pull from tanks if they have to. If a situation is this bad, the building itself is probably unusable and it's just a matter of time until they get a response team on site to set up temporary cooking.
You can do many things badly or one thing really, really well.
Waffle House is really, really good at being able to make their actually pretty crummy food.
Imagine there's a cooking skill tree. Waffle House looked at it, decided they didn't like that skill tree, and drew another skill tree next to it labeled "Survival Spec" and dumped all their skillpoints into that.
I've been to a handful of Waffle Houses over the years. A couple times for breakfast in the morning, but mostly to wind down after a night of drinking. There haven't ever been any outbursts during any of my trips. These were also exclusively locations in rural areas, which may be the difference. My experience is mediocre food cooked by people who were most likely on controlled substances.
Same. The ones I have been to have always been fairly straight forward and nie. And while the food is nothing to write home about, I have had far worse. So it's at least a good "We know it will work" restaurant.
Haha, I just mentioned Denny's before seeing your comment. Yeah, Denny's is nuts. Stabbings, fist fights, thugs, crazies. And this was many years ago, before things got even worse.
Where the hell are these Denny's you guys are going to? In college they were the go-to spot to eat after the bars closed. Or if you were up late studying. Don't ever remember an issue.
But this town was lily white, so maybe that partially explains it.
So, a while ago, some other people and I went to a Waffle House in a better (but not great) area. Was long wait. Went to Waffle House in less good area nearby. Got seated immediately. Much more blaqs. Other Waffle House despite being busier did not have cop. This Waffle House did. Black cop. Nice guy. After we ate he was like, "move along" (but with no real force behind it compared to how he said the same to other patrons). So we took a few minutes on goodbyes and left. That's the experience. Basically it's a microcosm of the low trust vs high trust society.
Love myself a Waffle House and a Denny's. Saw them mentioned in the comments and had to add, avoid those in major urban areas. On the outside near the interstate is the best. Coming home, many a night, we stopped at one or the other, that and, of course, White Castle. Back in the day, we tried that shit Shonies and there's a reason that greasy shit was sent to hell.

Yep. Still the crusty old sergeant who told us that knew what he was talking about from experience most likely.

Probably I would look at any crime map before visiting there.
How dare you not embrace “crime culture”.
If you can't find one, get a map of electoral results and keep out of the blue areas.
no, it's the niggers.

And as a comment suggested that if the waffle house in an area is closed, GET OUT as it means it's truly fucked in that area?
Civilization has truly collapsed.

During Hurricane Ian I was able to calm my wife by showing our waffle house was still open. I didn't tell her how many had closed.
I misunderstood at first and thought damn WH really is committed to the hood.
Apparently, there's an informal measure of disaster severity called the Waffle House Index:
Green = Full menu
Yellow = Limited menu
Red = Closed
Waffle House has disaster menus for:
No Electricity
No electricity knocks out the dishwasher, and over a longer period of time, refrigeration. In a no power situation, they can switch to manual dishwashing for critical kitchenware and use disposable servingware. They have a no refrigeration case as well, but that shouldn't ever happen because after some period of time without power they call for a refrigeration truck. Why isn't Waffle House in charge of FEMA? I feel like causality numbers for disasters would go WAY down if they were calling the shots!

You can live on it, but it tastes like shit

And uncontrolled substances, just for good measure. If you're working at a restaurant at night you're probably caffeinated to a dangerous degree.

Never one I’ve been in but I’ve heard stories like this. Great restaurant though if you are in America
Depending on the neighborhood, yes. There are a handful of restaurant chains that have a reputation for interesting crowds.
In the south, it's Waffle House.
Eastern midwest, it's White Castle.
Out in the empty west, it's Denny's.
Haha, I just mentioned Denny's before seeing your comment. Yeah, Denny's is nuts. Stabbings, fist fights, thugs, crazies. And this was many years ago, before things got even worse.
The mentioning of Denny's reminded me of this video
Haha that's historic. "WHAT THE FUCKS UP DENNYS?!!"
Where the hell are these Denny's you guys are going to? In college they were the go-to spot to eat after the bars closed. Or if you were up late studying. Don't ever remember an issue.

Depends on how many niggers are inside the building at once.
