Of course it was mercy. That was society's compromise with disgusting faggots. You can't really get rid of them. They've always existed, and they're someone's cousin, child, brother, etc. In some sense, it's not their fault they are the way they are. Some are abused; there are biological factors. It's no different than drug addiction, and gayness is also treatable, should anyone want to.
You discourage the behavior and make it known that they are seen as untrustworthy and keep them the fuck away from children. That is a mercy on all involved.
