You shouldn't be surprised. Most people are actually against total bans on abortion. You have not won the culture war on banning all abortions. You're not even close to that. Most Americans hate the idea of 8 month abortions. They also don't accept that Plan B is murder.
You can't impose your social morality on a population that doesn't tolerate it. This is a country built on a Liberal revolution. Overturning Roe and allowing the States to decide abortion is considered acceptable. Overturning abortion by criminalizing it is not actually going to get any support.
The Evangelicals lost the Culture War, and put Bush into power to try and capitalize on their brief momentum. It didn't turn out well, and we are all worse off for it as Dick Cheney campaigns against us. Do not replicate a bad strategy. Fight for your moral position in the streets and in the arts. Do not try to assert it as policy otherwise you will have galvanized the Left into acting instead of letting them stay demoralized.
