“To be part of creating accessibility for generations to come. For new generations this is their version of Tolkien, this is what my daughter will see of Tolkien’s works.”

I'll take Tolkien's version of Tolkien's work thanks

this is what my daughter will see of Tolkein's works

Yep they don't get it. You can't force something to be a cultural mainstay by fiat. Like all commies they think success and popularity is ordained rather than earned. They don't even understand the concept of something being "earned".

They don’t care. This series is a proclamation that they own the property and there is nothing anyone can do to stop them from ruining the franchise for future generations.

I know. Why is that controversial. Like when I told someone I didn’t watch Wheel of Time because I wanted to see Robert Jordan’s vision on the screen

I haven’t read wheel of time. I bailed on episode 1 when the tiny secluded town looked like a corporate diversity training cast.

It makes no sense. It completely takes me out of the show.

Since you haven't read it, you wouldn't know, but on top of being immersion breaking, it also makes meaningless a very important detail about the main character. Spoilers for the books below.

Rand Al'Thor is the only person in the village to have anything other than brown hair and eyes. He has red hair, paler skin, and blue eyes. This is because he was adopted from a battlefield, where his father found him as a baby whose mother, a woman of a race that lived across a major mountain range and had invaded for interesting reasons, had died in the war. He brought Rand home and raised him as a son. This ends up being crucially important to the plot of the entire series.

But nah. Town is diverse. It's uninteresting that he looks a bit different, because everyone looks a bit different.

the cinematic world that Peter Jackson created has immense value but we’ve shifted lenses since then.

Peter Jackson's lens:

We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. In a way, we were trying to make these films for him (Tolkien), not for ourselves.

I don't expect a narcissist to understand that viewpoint, though...

I'm not sure they do understand why people would value the original author's intentions.

Bear in mind that even their "morals" are built on shifting sand. I'm not sure they see any value at all to that kind of long-term consistency, preferring to bundle it all up under thought-terminating clichés rather than actually analysing it.

Interesting, when I read the Hobbit and the Trilogy I was able to relate just fine. Tolkien wrote it for England’s lost mythology but anyone is free to read it and someone else’s work is under no obligation to cater to you. If you don’t like it then make your own story. I’ve said it a thousand times that people who need to see themselves in everything have a problem

If they make their own story they know it will bomb and no one will watch it, thus they have to latch onto something already proven popular and fix ruin it.

of course they do

perpetual revolution requires every year to be year zero

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building renamed, every date has been altered. And that process continues day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Cant have any cultural touchstones that us little people can use to maintain a connection between the past and the present. First it is demonized, then it is erased.

Now and forever forward nobody can talk about Lord of the Rings without bringing modern politics into the discussion. Just like star wars, just like ghostbusters, just like magic the gathering, just like dungeons and dragons, just like videogames, just like sports.

And thanks to search engines and how they work the newer stuff will show up first. By creating the awful new things they poison the well against any young people who might be discovering it in the future.

We are fundamentally misunderstanding the situation. Amazon didn’t buy LOTR. Amazon doesn’t give two shits about the IP. Amazon bought an audience. Amazon bought you. And when you don’t watch their garbage, you’re like an investment going bad. That’s why they call you racist and sexist. They’re trying to scare you back into the box of fans that they purchased.

I doubt anyone here had hopes this would be good in anyway but just in case someone did

this is what my daughter will see of Tolkien’s works.

uh, she'll see nothing of Tolkien's work then, maybe she should read a book if she wants to experience an author's work.

Buy hard copies of the books because you just know they're going after those next.

Probably be a good idea to get 4K Blu ray discs of the theatrical and extended versions as well before they're "improved".

Never has a show more needed to fail. If the consOooOmers inhale this garbage by the bucketful then we will be cursed with a generation of Tolkien bastardization.

Like starwars.. 100 years from now, people will still know and recognize all the legacy characters like darth vader, yoda, han solo.. no one will remember any of the new characters like rey or poe.
