The biggest difference is that this happened at a track meet in full view of everyone, in the middle of a race. This wasn't recess, between classes, or even in class. This was pretty much a public event. And the kid was brazen (or stupid) enough to ignore that and immediately go to "he disrespected me"
At the very least the kid's coach would have been on the field and should have reigned him in before it happened.
I think it's the fact that this happened in the open, at a sanctioned event, in front of hundreds of people including parents, teachers, adults, etc. Who does that? (Blacks) Kids fight, sure. This wasn't a fight. This was a one sided unprovoked and unexpected attack.
Agreed that the government shouldn't be involved. Doesn't matter if it's school or not. For some punches, the government should not be involved. The real travesty here is that no one beat the nog to a pulp after he made the punch.
