Hey guys. Long-time lurker here. I've been watching both the culture war and world news, and recently there's been something that I haven't seen anyone really talk about. So here I am giving my thoughts.
Many companies have left the Russian market after their invasion of Ukraine. Aviation companies, tech companies, sports organizations, now even the big boys like Visa, Mastercard and PayPal are pulling out.
I think that what we're witnessing is the cancellation of an entire nation, which is the next step in cancel culture. And it will set a terrible precedent.
People can argue that Russia's cancellation is justified because of the Ukraine war, but that's not relevant at all.
This genie is out of the bottle now. If it's happened before it can happen again, and for less and less serious offenses.
What's that? Your country refuses to cave in to the wokists and implement Diversity, Inclusivity and Equity policies? We're going to cancel you until you change your mind, then maybe we'll demand more and more concessions because nothing you ever do will be enough.
No nation in the world is going to be safe, except Daddy China, because the wokists will never go after China even though they're actually genociding minorities. The only way to save your nation from this would be to become self-sufficient, and that would be extremely difficult in this financialized, globalist economy.
We seem to live in very dark times. Nation-states are becoming irrelevant in favor of a globalist woke order.
What do you guys think? Am I right on the money with this or am I over-reacting to recent events?
I have the same feeling we are going in this direction. In fact, before this war, Poland and Hungary were just punished by the European Union for not implementing "progressive social politics". They will receive less money from the development funds. This is the beginning of this new strategy that you are describing.
If the Russian cancellation works, we'll likely see the same tactics applied to Hungary and Poland first because they tried to resist the wokist agenda and I fear that they'll have no choice but to accept.
Losing on money from development funds is one thing that can be compensated for in other ways, but complete cancellation by all companies and Western governments is another.
India, China, KSA, Qatar, Pakistan, Brazil stand with Russia, they will cancel the whole world till they are left all alone and westerners start immigrating to the east to escape the fascists.
Neoliberalism is cancer.
The whole world is going authoritarian at this point. The only difference is whether you want to be under the thumb of wokists, or deal with Chinese social credit and corrupt autocrats that don't care about you.
We're also seeing a decisive battle between neoliberalism and the rest of the world now. If Russia falls, our chances of stopping the new order will be very low. Being able to cancel entire nations and succeed will be very powerful indeed.
To be fair, our chances of stopping globohomo forcefully diversifying us all are already pretty abysmal.
The only thing that will stop the far leftists that I can see is time. Their ideology and what they're doing is inherently unsustainable and fails to address any of the existing societal problems, which are only getting worse over time.
In time, they'll collapse. But they'll deal long-term damage to the nations where they've wielded their influence.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”
― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)
I'd rather live under corrupt autocrats than wokist busybodies.
Everyone would.
The issue is that sometimes corrupt autocrats transition into corrupt autocrats on a mission.
Well said. A tyrant will often look for ways to appease their guilty conscience, and woke ideology might seem like a way to do that for some tyrants. But this can only result in worse tyranny.
we're already being ruled by corrupt autocrats who don't give a shit about us. ours aren't even competent enough to keep basic infrastructures running
canceling a nation that probably has the 2nd or 3rd most powerful military and with a lot of clout geopolitically.
Always has been
The only thing changing is the illusion is fading.
Promote buttsex or we take you out.
This dystopia sucks.
This is so monumentally stupid for various reasons.
Russia and China have always been a check to American power precisely because they are relatively secure from American naval power, so trade organisations that use the US Dollar for oil act as a financial mesh for countries to have no choice but to live under the American umbrella. Western companies have always acted as a golden handcuff to foreign powers.
This is corporations undoing decades of American foreign policy on a strategic level and I'm not sure anyone in the white house knows or cares. And the dumbest part is that it directly harms american and corporate interests. If they are not part of the corporate system they cannot be controlled or influenced by it.
This does seem like a very short-sighted move. It seems likely that there will be many consequences which we can scarcely imagine, but I doubt they've put any thought into this before proceeding with Russia's cancellation.
It hurt itself in its confusion.
Look, this is truly the funniest thing I have heard all day. Idk about prosperous, but stable and predictable? 2 Adjectives one should never use in regards to Russian treatment of business.
You talk as if sanctions were invented yesterday. "Judea declares war on Germany". All Jewish businesses were urged to boycott anything German. If all Mexicans in the USA decided to boycott all non-mexican stores and services wouldn't it show they are Mexican first and American patriots second? There can be no dual loyalty.
And look how well that worked.
right right. economic isolation is a new war tactic your generation invented.
"guys guys guys! I just invented this really cool thing! I call it sex with my hand!"
Visa & Mastercard have fucked themselves so bad. Have you seen the latest on Russia switching to UnionPay, the Chinese payment system?
Short term feelings, meets long term strategy. Guess what will be standing in the end?
Meanwhile gas prices in Russia are 1/3 of US prices, AFTER the sanctions. But don't worry Duddy Biden will now allow Iran/Venezuela oil to roll in, rather than boosting local production.
And blackface has flown to Europe to talk about 'aid'. Fucking chodes.
When Mexico is the most based N American country.
This is how the world wars started. The big guys wanted to battle, and kicked around anyone they thought was smaller than them until one revolted.
Those who limit who they trade with don't last. It's like saying you're never going to purchase at a discount and prefer to pay more than retail.
Western leaders are pursuing a bad strategy so they can introduce Money 2.0. It won't work and will instead result in global economic depression, famine, and war.
Almost as if globalism is a trap to get you reliant on them. Almost as if the healthiest and most robust mode if existence is fractal self-sufficiency: a self-sufficient nation made of self-sufficient communities made of self-sufficient families.
I think you're right in your perspective, but it could go the other way. I've read before that a 1 party government is the worst, and a 2 party government is the second worst, one might extrapolate that similarly a single global order is the worst.
China straight up says "yeah we're going to do this in-country, us stuff is banned".
Russia doesn't seem to be able to do that quite as directly, but perhaps this will lead it to the same end, seems like it would make a lot more sense for a russian payment processor to be developed in russia than to just send all the money made over to the US.
They keep talking about russia's biggest income stream being oil and gas. If the west goes to electric cars and oil demand drops does that seriously hurt russia? Seems like a declining nation with nuclear weapons is a dangerous idea. Better that they develop their own versions of western systems that keeps the money in russia.
As an individual I would like to isolate away from this political bullshit but I can't. An entire nation, especially one the size of russia, can, and would possibly benefit from it.
Funnily enough, Russia has a plan in place for disconnecting their internet from the rest of the world. Won't help them any if their nation collapses though.
People talk about Russia collapsing like it isn’t a country full of hard people who are perfectly capable of subsisting on “hard bread”.
The soft western nations are far more vulnerable to true collapse. Especially when you realize that the only lasting collapse is demographic collapse.
Collapse doesn't mean extinction. Most of them will survive just fine, but their economy and infrastructure could fall into disarray enough to completely change their daily lives.
I mean, the Apple Pay thing alone was enough to fuck up the Metro bad for a day. Which could push people into missing work and massively withdrawing money from the banks, which we all know what happens then.
We'll have to see how things go. Maybe they'll tighten their belts, maybe they'll collapse.
We cannot deny that the West has been hitting them really hard though, what with shutting down payment infrastrcture in Russia, as well as sanctioning them really hard.
