Do to this I want to shift over to AD&D, unfortunately that is harder to do then 3d edition. There are less online resources.
At first I was upset about it but then I realized that it is fine, it is the most authentic experience you can have. You need to open a player manual or the monster manual rather then just go on a wiki and search.
I managed to find a lot of the older modules for free on archive.org. Now I'm trying to find someone to play with. I tried to get a few of the guys to play it recently but we just ended up doing a barbeque and getting drunk for 2 days in a row.
Long story short, I refuse to give even one dollar to anything that would profit WOTC. This includes BG3.
THAC0 and decreasing armor are not that bad. What I found complicated was the combat. Divide combat in to segments and then have your second attack at the end of the round, except if you cast a spell that took 5 segment but you were suppose to have the 6'th segment so it would have been cast the next round. It made a bit of confusion. AD&D also had you roll a d6 for initiative vs d12 and d20 later on. This caused a lot more of at the same time attacks.
But true, it did keep normies out. As Gygax himself said, the game was designed for intelligent and creative people. Is surprising how much you preserve if you keep games hard to play.
Fuck the books, pick a system you like and make up whatever you want. The books are just a guide to ideas, anyway. I doubt anyone ever slavishly stuck to the books.
And they need to stop thinking "race" and maybe get rid of the bullshit halfbreeds. Think of them as "species", and then your species differences are more than cosmetic. Why should just anyone have the ability to navigate labyrinths like a Minotaur can?
Anyway, they already dumbed down the morality system, they'll probably completely get rid of that next.
I agree to some extent. The lore and what WOTC changes can affect what you do around the table. You are better staying away from drow entirely then have a moral discussion about being an evil race. It ruins the entire mood.
Bandits and mindless undead. This is about it. The fact that you had a good Mind Flayer in BG3 was the worse part of that game.
For some reason that annoyed me more then shadowheart being a tranny and the forced diversity in skin color. That place in the middle of nowhere is more diverse then modern day London.
"There is no moral discussion to be had. There is an elemental plane of fire, water, air, and earth, and in the same measure, you can see the map, there is a plane of Good and of Evil, and being there causes you atmospheric effects just like the others. Good and Evil are elements. Some humanoids have minimal fire and lots of water in them. Drow have some Evil in them. Do not campaign for a fire elemental to be more watery."
I personally never understood why they are called "races" to begin with. Like it they had minor differences between them, alright I guess, but we're talking about like, humans, elves, dwarves, lizardmen and such, they have almost nothing in common lol.
I thought it had to do with half-breads. Since you can't do that cross-species thing.
The truth is that you should probably not allow half-elves or half-orcs. Elves are an alien species that somewhat resemble humans, they should not be able to have babies with humans. Look at lions and tigers, they are both feline but the combination are sterile or worse.
A lot of it is also do to Tolkien, he says the race of Elves and race of Men or something to that extent. He also made half elves.
I honestly think they really don't know the difference between "race" and "species" and think they're on the same level, rather than nested for some reason. You hear that nonsense "there's only one race - the human race!" ... oh, so, humans are just one breed (race) out of a bigger species that includes chimps and bonobos then? People hate it when you point that out (and then the same people will berate anyone who feels scandalized by being related to a genuine reeing retard for some bizarre reason.)
This is why I play D&D 3.5 and am working on building out my library of 3.5 materials (despite some truly painful prices).
Way more granularity, way more customization, no shoehorned-in character backgrounds or motivations if all you want to do is play a walking block of stats and roll to fuck up some goblins, and no woke shit to be found.
You can search for materials on torrents or archive for pdf versions. You can also find places that can print them, if it is a local store and you know the guy working there it should be no problem.
I did that with some old AD&D modules and they turned out great., it also helps if you want to hand player handbooks to your players. The actual handbook can be expensive but a printed version is great and a lot cheaper.
Oh yeah, PDFs are good stuff. I've got a lot of them, pretty much the whole 3.5 collection so I don't have much trouble playing and running it, but there are a few I'd still like to have in physical copies so I snap them up when/where I find them for prices lower than "black market organ". :-P
wotc was pozzed a long time ago and nobody shpuld support anything they do
but the nice thing us eatlier additions fluff is perfectly usable if for some reason you think the newer crunch has merit

castles and crusaders is basically 2nd edition with some of the jank polished off: https://trolllord.com/indexnew.html
I do like the art.
THAC0 keeps the normies out.

"Dog" is just a "background", not a "species" or even a "race". At least, according to Nu-D&D.

The thing is, when are they going to stop? When there's no antagonists beyond mindless slime monsters? I mean, dragons are people, too.

OG Alternity is the best system ever made. Fite me.
There it is: The most retarded thing I'll read all day.
4E went too far with the grittiness and grimdark, and 5E went too far with sunshine and rainbows.
4E at least fits the fantasy theme more, while 5E just feels like budget discworld without the witty humor.
The flaws of 4th were mostly mechanical and design. The actual setting was overall fine.
Or Xanth after pretty much everything seemed to be tamed (including the formerly fearsome Gap Dragon.)
Just use Basic Fantasy RPG core rulesets, and add house rules that a DM can agree to.
ruin your property so faggots and tourists feel better
