Fuck the books, pick a system you like and make up whatever you want. The books are just a guide to ideas, anyway. I doubt anyone ever slavishly stuck to the books.
And they need to stop thinking "race" and maybe get rid of the bullshit halfbreeds. Think of them as "species", and then your species differences are more than cosmetic. Why should just anyone have the ability to navigate labyrinths like a Minotaur can?
Anyway, they already dumbed down the morality system, they'll probably completely get rid of that next.
I agree to some extent. The lore and what WOTC changes can affect what you do around the table. You are better staying away from drow entirely then have a moral discussion about being an evil race. It ruins the entire mood.
Bandits and mindless undead. This is about it. The fact that you had a good Mind Flayer in BG3 was the worse part of that game.
For some reason that annoyed me more then shadowheart being a tranny and the forced diversity in skin color. That place in the middle of nowhere is more diverse then modern day London.
"There is no moral discussion to be had. There is an elemental plane of fire, water, air, and earth, and in the same measure, you can see the map, there is a plane of Good and of Evil, and being there causes you atmospheric effects just like the others. Good and Evil are elements. Some humanoids have minimal fire and lots of water in them. Drow have some Evil in them. Do not campaign for a fire elemental to be more watery."
I personally never understood why they are called "races" to begin with. Like it they had minor differences between them, alright I guess, but we're talking about like, humans, elves, dwarves, lizardmen and such, they have almost nothing in common lol.
I thought it had to do with half-breads. Since you can't do that cross-species thing.
The truth is that you should probably not allow half-elves or half-orcs. Elves are an alien species that somewhat resemble humans, they should not be able to have babies with humans. Look at lions and tigers, they are both feline but the combination are sterile or worse.
A lot of it is also do to Tolkien, he says the race of Elves and race of Men or something to that extent. He also made half elves.
I honestly think they really don't know the difference between "race" and "species" and think they're on the same level, rather than nested for some reason. You hear that nonsense "there's only one race - the human race!" ... oh, so, humans are just one breed (race) out of a bigger species that includes chimps and bonobos then? People hate it when you point that out (and then the same people will berate anyone who feels scandalized by being related to a genuine reeing retard for some bizarre reason.)

"Dog" is just a "background", not a "species" or even a "race". At least, according to Nu-D&D.

The thing is, when are they going to stop? When there's no antagonists beyond mindless slime monsters? I mean, dragons are people, too.

OG Alternity is the best system ever made. Fite me.
