There's been tons of James Bonds. The Bourne Identity for instance, or Mission Impossible.
It's not about spy movies, Bond is an archetype of manly confidence in culture and that's why they want to destroy the character. Just like they destroyed Dr. Who as a icon of manly intelligence and wit. Or destroyed Jedi as paragons of manly stoicism.
They're not even making a spy movie, or a Bond movie. The entire point is destroy the icons.
I would agree, but Bond is largely representative of the masculine fantasy and served that perfectly. For that representation alone, I find any change to canonical Bond tropes yet another property lost to this shitty grey future.
The series had a good run. They'll crash and burn it. We'll have a few entertaining years where they wail and gnash their teeth about the fact that people aren't paying to see their "reimagined" Bond movies. They'll call us the usual 'ist and 'obic names.

Austin Powers was too perfect a pastiche of Bond. They had to ruin Bond to avoid playing into the Powers jokes, and instead of leaning into it, keeping the character intact, and having a laugh along with the audience, they sucked the humor and camp out of the franchise.

Technically - this isn't the first time the left has tried this charade. They did it in the 70s both by retelling movies YOU never saw (because they sucked) so they were never reproduced or replayed and by shifting cartoons (like redoing Tom and Jerry to be friends and non-violent or to promote leftist themes of clean air and equality. Ever see THOSE cartoons? If you're young enough you probably haven't (look up Yogi's Ark) Now you've probably heard of Captain Planet but that was Ted Turners personal pet project that got shoveled everywhere he had control up until about 10 years ago.
