If Apple crosses this line, there’s no going back. It will set a dire precedent and shift the borders of personhood irrevocably. Google will follow suit. Soon any system that doesn’t implement on-device scanning/reporting will be deemed illegal. Soon Erdoğan, Putin, will decide the scope. (media.kotakuinaction2.win)

UK ISPs created a system to block child-abuse images but it only took a few years before they had to block knock-off watches and the like too. As the court says, adding another few entries to the block-list is cheap once you’ve built the system.

This is why ALL information needs to be legal.

Hate speech is the most important speech. Disgusting images are the most important images. When those fall, it's the end of your free speech.

Every person needs to decide for themselves. We can't have a priesthood deciding what information is depraved, subversive, or obscene.

If you live in mainland Europe - feel free to order the most expensive and customized mac product and then return for a full refund under the EU's 14 day 'distance selling directive'

Unimaginably based.

Why?

They have to refund and their only option is to sell to someone else at a loss, because the eventual buyer does not value the customized features.

That's it? I thought there would be some weird policy where you can keep the product, or something.

Also, it's still not a loss, just a somewhat smaller profit, so I don't see it being that useful...

This is going to extend past phones too. You need to assume that if you input any information into a closed source system, it is going to be collected and exploited. Everyone needs to be interfacing with open source software whenever possible, especially operating systems.

Everyone reading this needs to start learning how to use Linux TODAY. The way things are going, you are either going to need to ideologically conform or you will be disappeared like dissenters in China. That is, unless you take steps to protect yourself.

The left part of this image was always a gift, and you were naive to think a corporation like apple ever protected your privacy. That said, I don't blame anyone who is just now becoming aware of this, and if privacy is actually something you value it's not too late. There's a lot of degoogled android roms and that's the best bet today in terms of privacy without sacrificing utility. I recommend GrapheneOS, but if you're apt to set it up you can do your research and find the other roms. If you're lazy or a noob you can follow the Freedom Phone which looks to have potential but it's yet to be seen if that will be an open source platform. If it isn't, avoid it. You really can't afford to be lazy or ignorant about your privacy today, so I recommend you start to follow these topics and learn what it takes to actually secure your privacy.

They are all corrupted. It is already the hardware. The only way out (at the time) is shutting down the computers.

Need to start learning OpenBSD. It’s the only FOSS OS that has yet to be pozzed or taken over be corporations as Linux large has. At least until Theo kicks the bucket.

Everything runs on processors that have "management engines" (undisclosed spyware) built-in.

Hang on to your old computers.

You will soon live in a world where only old, outdated systems can be trusted not to be reporting on you.

I guess it makes sense now why you see all those old IBMs in cyberpunk fiction; only the old ways are safe.

I'm pretty sure Google has already followed suit. At least, they don't have an issue snooping on your e-mail and google docs/drives files, so I don't imagine they aren't already doing it on your phone.

Exactly. Apple is being caught because this is at odds with their 'privacy drivel', but google from day one has told everyone to keep lubing up for the ads up their ass.

And now comes the perfect excuse to demand non-mobile platforms for popular mobile games.

This won't stop at phones. This is for legal scanning of all your products - macbooks, windows PCs (yes, windows 10 will scan your files for illicit content - it only makes sense, right?)

Imagine when they get the will to institute scanning for copyrighted material.
