Is this the one where everyone votes for Starship Troopers, but the mods decide they want to do something else, so they lock the thread and have us read... Plato's Apology?
It definitely took a second reading to fully digest it. The first time I read it I just wanted more bug blasting action and it wasn't at all what I was expecting. The second time through was with the conscious decision to actually engage with the philosophy being presented and it really hit home.
I bought Starship Troopers over the weekend figuring it would win, and it would have gotten my vote anyway. Still a few others on this list I want to read so keep suggesting them in the future or I will myself.
Its one of my absolute favorites, and I think the controversy around how many people cited it as inspiration for serial killing (3 different guys, around 50~ victims) has kept it just under the radar enough that no one talks about it anymore.
Which is a shame, as its probably the best example of villain protagonist I've seen, as well as showing how someone can be both evil and sympathetic without diminishing either.
I'm going to have to put a vote in for Starship Troopers. I'll look forward to rereading it if it wins because I think I was just 13 or 14 at the time and I'm a lot older now.
I imagine my views towards it will be about the same. My stance has changed on some things but contributing to society to gain the privileges of it hasn't been one of 'em. May have gotten that from the book now that I think about it. But maybe not, I've had a few years to see how well universal suffrage is working out.
Only just noticed this but happy to take part and glad to see troopers won. I've read it a bunch of times but always glad to do a re-read.
Not my cup of tea usually but Soygon has a great little vid about the politics of Starship troopers. Wouldn't recommend it for first time readers since there are spoilers galore though.
So how will this work? Are we going to have "homework" that we'll need to read every night so that everybody is on the same chapter with daily discussion of the most recent chapter? Or will we just read at our own pace over 1-2 weeks and then have a discussion at the end once the majority have finished? Also, will we have a "grace period" before reading starts where those of us without a copy of the chosen book can locate a copy?
I voted Heir to the Empire because I have no life. That and maybe Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of my favourite fictional characters, but mostly the former.

.win needs to introduce flair so two years from now over on kotakuinaction3 dot win I can have "Option 4 Alum" next to my name.
I am pretty sure that this was a reference to what the KiA mods did with Option 4.
I don't read much fiction, but Starship Troopers is an exception; and one of the very few works of fiction I've reread.

In the process of rereading different series myself; Malazan book of the fallen.
Starship Troopers got my vote. I'm not Murican and not really well-versed in sci-fi, so I have never read it, even though I've heard a lot about it.
I wonder how you will feel about it after 15 years.

I'm the one who put forth The Collector in the first place, but Starship Troopers is an absolute classic.
I just looked up that one and it sounds really interesting. Even if it won't be picked this round, you just made me want to read it eventually.

Apology gets my vote.
See, I predicted it!
Time to go make KiA 3 I guess..
Also voted Starship Troopers because I've never read it

I started reading Starship Troopers and in the first chapter it says females are better pilots because they have faster reflexes than men (lol).
I hope this isn't a sign of things to come....
