Nobody wins on this one. Epic are 100% a ChiCom front, while Apple is Apple, and the literal inventors of planned obsolescence in electronics. Fuck them both, bring back HUAC.

If they brought back HUAC it would be to investigate "dangers" to america like the My Pillow guy.

Yeah, if they did it. The whole lesson of the past century in the United States is this: Always gatekeep.

Failing to do so is what lead to the present day, where leftists acting in bad faith have infiltrated everything and tyrannize the innocent with stolen power and illegitimate authority.

Gatekeeping in the past would have saved our futures.

Disagree. It is blatantly better for consumers if Epic win. Walled gardens are anti-consumer.

They were beaten to the punch by lightbulb manufacturers about a century ago.

How many times have I heard this one?

Oh let's see.. with digital media...

"Yeah guys, getting rid of physical media for digital will be better for consumers and cheaper overall!"

Meanwhile, in the real world, prices have only gone up, content has become more limited, and none of it has been for the benefit of consumers.

Oh, what about streaming being better than owning the product?

"Yeah guys, streaming makes it so that you don't have to download all those large files anymore. It'll be cheaper and better for consumers in the long run!"

Meanwhile, in the real world, streaming has allowed companies to retroactively censor old content, as well as force-feed content onto users that they don't want. Lack of ownership and rise of subscription-based models also ensures that you'll be paying for service access forever, with zero long-term benefits for the end-user (i.e., see Microsoft 360 suite).

Someone talked about the long-term negative effects if Epic wins against Apple, but I can't recall what those effects are off the top of my head.

I think this article sort of highlights the broader reaching effects if Epic does win: https://www.wired.com/story/epic-apple-lawsuit-one-legal-question/

I believe one of the counterarguments is that this will also affect other proprietary distribution and social media platforms in terms of what is and isn't allowed on their platform. With Epic being bank-rolled by Tencent, I imagine there's a long-game to this stunt for the CCP in terms of what they want on the market (or don't want on the market).

But Kaarous is right, no matter who wins the consumers don't. The CCP has never had consumer interests in mind, and Apple is all about controlling the ecosystem of software they put on the market.

Based on who is involved in this lawsuit, there is no outcome where consumers actually benefit.

EDIT: Oh, I just remembered! Someone brought up Nintendo. Nintendo runs a walled garden for their hardware/software as well. Opening up companies to force acceptance of software without costs would mean that platforms that carefully curate their software, such as Nintendo, could fall afoul of the ruling (depending of how it goes). One person commented that it could mean that forcing acceptance of certain kinds of software might make some platforms more susceptible to propaganda-laden content, user information access by third-party developers (or in this case, the CCP), as well as other invasive properties.

...None of those things happened because of digital media.

"Yeah guys, streaming makes it so that you don't have to download all those large files anymore. It'll be cheaper and better for consumers in the long run!"

If you want to watch something once, streaming is fine. If you want a personal collection, you should obviously never be paying for anythign that isn't stored on your own drive.

With Epic being bank-rolled by Tencent, I imagine there's a long-game to this stunt for the CCP in terms of what they want on the market (or don't want on the market).

Apple and other silicon valley giants already bend over for the CCP anyway. If anything, Apple losing control over its own app store makes the CCP less able to influence it.

Rofl, yes, lets pray for Apple to save us from Chinese surveillance. I am sure Apple will answer our prayers.

How about I just have control over my own hardware and have the ability to install the most agressive firewall and adblock on it that I care to.

The point is that BOTH of these companies are bad for us and choosing the lesser evil of the two is still bad for ALL of us. You should be cheering for both of them to fail and not one to win over the other because their existence does not help any of us.

Nowhere in my post did I say anything about Apple saving anyone from anything. In fact, I explicitly mentioned that whoever wins WE, the consumers, still lose, that includes Apple.

How about I just have control over my own hardware and have the ability to install the most agressive firewall and adblock on it that I care to.

Great, but nothing in the Epic vs Apple fight suggests this is what Epic wants for you. Heck, their own launcher is a walled garden of carefully curated content designed for CCP spying, so it's literally a pot versus a kettle where both of them are housing poison for the common people.

I don't know who has worse autism, you or WhitePhoenix. This is not how you communicate with other people. Learn how to have a conversation. You don't take turns replying to each other sentences. Fucking dumb bitch.

I agree on Walled Gardens. But, then you've got Epic who decided to use their Fortnite money to drag games into the whole "your game can only be released on the Epic store for a year even if you already said it would be released on multiple platforms", plus the "we'll guarantee X number of sales" which - while potentially good for the devs - is terrible for the consumer.

So, from a consumer PoV, I'm highly skeptical about one being better than the other.

I've hated the entire concept of a protected ecosystem and that's always kept me from their stuff. Let me install things as I please. If you want to sell apps, fine but make it a choice.

My mindset goes way back though. I remember some 25 years ago having to talk my dad into dropping AOL for a barebones ISP. Or perhaps the reason I generally hate Steam, Epic, Battle.net or whatever else all the same. I don't want your bullshit disguised as features.
