Any games/movies/books/bands/youtubers ya like?

I'm having a problem: I think I'm slowly becoming a man with no taste. Now what's better than gaining taste than by stealing it?

I want to know what you guys recommend off the top of your heads.

1000% agree with this one.

No spoken words, no shoehorned politics, just great storytelling through facial expressions, sound effects, and raw violence.

Also who doesn't want to see a man riding a goddamn t-rex?

Let's stretch that character count.

F is for Family is an animation that I like, by Bill Burr and is politically incorrect but stuff funny and relatable. Fav part is in S2 where Bob is talking to Rosie (Black Guy) "I know Slavery was wrong Rosie but I would have paid top dollar for you." He tries to come across as affectionate in his own stupid way but says something racist instead. Last season, S5 being made now after Netflix ordered that it be the last. Was fun while it lasted however.

Trailer

Thunderbolt Fantasy is a taiwanese puppet Wuxia written by Gen Urobuchi (Madoka and others). It is really fun, 2 seasons and 2 movies with a S3 sometime really soon. Love this series, rekindled my love of Wuxia. Scene

Also got a manga for S1 and yes that is Syou Fu Kan killing a guy with just a stick. Page

https://nyaa.si/?f=0&c=0_0&q=Thunderbolt

Orville

Is basically Star Trek in Spirit if not name. Seth hired people who worked on TNG and Voyager and made his own series that has some good to great episodes. Elara episodes in particular tend to be very good. Watching STD

Hacksaw Ridge:

Mel Gibson directed war movie, came out before 1917 and I think has been a little forgotten. It's a pretty good movie about being strong enough to believe in your convictions. Trailer

Lupin III The First:

Stylized animated movie from Japan, on par or even surpassing Pixar's quality. Good mystery, good characters. Don't watch it dubbed, native is better. Trailer

Helsreach

An audio book on the city of Helsreach in 40k but animated and cleaned up. A 2:30 hour movie on how awesome the Astartes are. Movie

Ghost Stories Dub:

This is a national treasure and should be watched at least once. Trailer

Battlebots:

4 seasons of the reboot now, 5th almost here. They tried the "First female in the sport" angle in the 2nd season but... Robot combat is all about results, you put a sand cover trap as your main weapon, yeah, that shit is flying off. Tombstone is always a crowd favorite because of his high damage. Tombstone Fight

Terry Pratchett Sky TV Movies

Before that awful Watchman series comes out, Terry actually had a few movies produced by Sky in 2010, Color of Magic, Hogsfather and my favorite, Going Postal. Not only do they stick with the spirit of the books, there's bloody good acting in there as well. Part 1 of Postal

Hornblower

Speaking of TV movies. Each episode is 1:40 in length and it follows a young navy cadet in the British navy, a little stuffy but really good quality for an early 2000s series. First episode

Scrubs

was a sitcom from 1998 to 2008. It's a good mix of character drama, jokes and JD's daydreams. Recent news about this is that Sam Lloyd, Ted died of cancer last year. And Zach and Donald are doing a podcast rewatching each episode. They addressed the blackface stuff when BLM was popular in May and I think they had the episodes pulled. It's BS to be honest so I don't bother with that. The series itself I like. Best of Ted

Boondocks

It's racist, it's black but it's also a look at black culture in 2006-2008 America. There's a reboot coming but Grandad died last year so who knows what'll happen to that. They also pulled the Jimmy Rebel episode, which again is BS. JImmy Rebel

Gargoyles

A forgotten Disney series. They were pretty hands off with this and as a cartoon, it's great. Kind of been forgotten by Disney and it's creator is/was trying to do something with it but he's probably moved on. Second season is where the good stuff is, 50 episodes of worldbuilding and character development, don't watch 3rd season, as that's unconnected. Intro

Pentagon Wars

is about Military Bureaucracy from a real life story. It's a subtle dry humor kind of film but I like it because it's slightly absurd but kind of did really happen. Best Bit Full move

Hero (2002)

A Wuxia staring Jet Li, it's a personal favorite not just in story, themes and characters but was made at a time when china was less shit globally. Trailer

Legend of Galactic Heroes

Long, Long, LOOOONG series. 110 episode main, 50 episode OVA, about a dozen movies. But oh so worth it. The main thrust of the story is the Twin protags of Yang Wen Li, a Tactical Genius who works for a failing corrupt democracy of the Free Planets Alliance but still believes in the idea of personal freedom and Reinhard von Lohengramm, a young aristocrat looking to seize power through military achievement after his sister is taken by the Kaizer. The duality of Democracy failing but still "Free" vs Rising Autocracy out of the stagnant Goldenbaum dynasty is why /pol/ love it so much. Oh, and the classical German music with space battles. They utilize it so effectively. Example OP 3 https://nyaa.si/view/262181

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

A 26 episode OVA remake of the Yamato from 2013, it's bloody brilliant. How do you keep something from the 80s, but revive it, clean up the sound effects, the animation but still retain that spirit of the voyage. This is how. Listen to that OP and tell me you don't want to head into the Sea of Stars. OP If you like Yamato after this, give Super Robot Wars V ago, Yamato plays a major part in that story. Can be tricky to get a hold of though, as Steam/Namco have region locked it.

Miami Vice:

Short during 84 - 89 in Miami, it's 80s to the core, with the music, the style of the cars, neon, drugs and babes in bikini's. A time when America was more fun. It's a solid crime show as well. Should be able to find BDs of it somewhere. Scene from first episode

Tintin (1991)

These were made by a French animation studio and bankrolled by good old Nelvanna. They're a little rough but I like em as they're very faithful adaptations of the books. 39 episodes total. Episode

Metalocalypse

Animation is a bit boddy horror at times but as a metal series, it's very very Brutal. Now if only AS could give Brendan the rights back and stop being Dildos about him wanting to finish the series. Pickle's Rehab

As for games: Darkest Dungeon (Mods)

Game is good by itself but mods can do so much more. Want more classes? Here's one good at Riposte. Game too hard because you don't know what to do? Here's icons on items, Increased inventory, stacked items and 5 trinket slots, plus a general healing buff of +2. Plus I love the artstyle of it. Game is hard but it isn't unfair and if it is too hard, you can mod in things to make it slightly easier. Better UI and above I'd just recommend to cut down on grind in the mid-late game. Thorn

Forever in the service of Milady. Thorn is a personal favorite mod class.

Xcom 2 (Mods)

Base game is sorta ehh, but the amount of assets you can bring into a mission is staggering. Imagine Modern Warfare Cpt Price in his gillie suit, Cannoness Selena Agna in full SoB armor, Sam Fisher with no armor and MEC Troopers coming back from Enemy Within all on a mission. It's amazing all the custom detail you can do. Downside is long loadtimes and potential conflicts in classes but you should be okay. Price

Stellaris

Get a pirate copy so you can get all the DLC. There's a good selection of mods, I'd recommend more research (Cortana AI if possible).with the matching Advisor. Both are very good mods that add her to the game, both with voice lines and function. Cortana

Dungeons 3

Don't know if people care for a Dungeon Keeper type game. Writing can get a little cringy, even in the DLC but adds Dark Elf Thalia as a hero to the dungeon so there's that. Give it a go though, I like it. Trailer

Spellforce 3

Ahhh, I love this. It's different to other games, not quite RTS or CRPG yet combines both and makes it work. Good writing and voices, gameplay is quick so using abilitles can be a but hard but it's just a good fantasy game that isn't selling you bullshit. Can immerse yourself in the world. Trailer

Yakuza 0

Leave this here. Translation is good, it's only later titles like A Dragon and 6 that had stuff changed for western release. Because of course they did. This is just pure cocaine. Nutshell

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy

3 games in one and for $30, Capcom is actually being nice for once. Played the originals back on the DS and the remaster holds true. Give it a go, it's popular for a reason. Also a lot of reading, so be prepared. Trailer

Homeworld Deserts of Kharak

Yeah, not the original Homeworlds or HD by Gearbox. I like this, it's story is smooth, the situation is unique and it's another journey that leads right into Homeworld 1. Gameplay

World in Conflict

Before Massive got enslaved by Ubisoft, they made this gorgeous game. What would happen if the Cold War went hot, the US gets invaded in Seattle (ha, ha they can have it) and as a response, it falls to National Guard forces to try and push them back as most of Americas military is stationed in Europe with NATO. The story to this was written by a Clancy like writer that takes situations like that and makes a compelling story out of them. USS Missouri turning up to save you in one mission for instance. I also love that alot of these weapons and tech are still "Cold War" so no missile destroyers, Javelins or modern gear, just old stuff their father used in Vietnam. Battleship

Trails in the Sky

Not one for the Legend of Heroes series, as that has alot of entries and I can't keep up with them all, same with Atelier. However, it was translated faithfully by XSEED and they did a really good job on these 3 JRPGs. What I like about this is they take place in one kingdom, meaning in 2nd you can walk around the entire map and I like that. It's a solid JRPG and I've played alot worse (Star Ocean 4 for example). Trailer

As for YTbers

Civvie11, Mandaloregaming, Ssethtzeench

Raycevick Mass Effect years later, very good.

ymfah's no killing Dark Brotherhood, no Magic Mage Guild and no stealing Thieves Guild are good.

Red Letter Media I like. And Alfa's Emperor TTS.

That's it, I could list more but there should be something there for you. I could list more like yuri manga, wuxia or anime recommendations but I'll keep them to myself for now. If you take nothing from this, just remember to have fun. I know it's a fugging meme like "Fun, what is that?" But you should enjoy whatever you do, have fun with it. Don't let them take that from you, because that's how you become blackpilled and that's bad.

Gigabased my man. World in Conflict is the shit, the campaign is incredible and so was the multiplayer back when it was new, although I don't think anyone still plays it today.

The Pratchett movies are also amazing. Okay, Colour of Magic didn't really do it for me, but The Hogfather is excellent and Going Postal is pure kino.

Also regarding Deserts of Kharak - the original Homeworld got a remake recently, didn't it? I only played the original, but assuming the remake didn't go woke, I'd definitely recommend it, the campaign is amazing. "There's nothing left for us here. Let's go." makes me tear up even today.

Oh and speaking of space games, I'd also wholeheartedly recommend the Freespace series - they're space sims with an amazing storyline, and there are a ton of fan-made campaigns as well, some of which are pretty great. The devs open sourced the engine a while back, so you can also get some mods that make the game look amazing even today. SEND FIGHTERS!

And now that I remembered Freespace: the same studio went on to make the Saints Row games. The series is like a parody of GTA and I'd say SR3 and SR4 have held up exceptionally well even today. 4 is kinda weird due to the literal superpowers you get from the start, but it's still really fun, even though it's fairly short and not very challenging - but you can get these games for like 5 bucks during Steam sales nowadays, and it's so worth it. Beat people with a dildo bat, or kill them with Dubstep, or play as literal Uncle Sam and 'MERICA!

Oh and regarding books: Right now I'm reading Unsong by Scott Alexander; I think he originally published it on his blog chapter by chapter, but there's an ebook around that compiles it all. It's incredibly original and very well written. It's basically "what if everything in the Bible was literally real and how would it work in 20th century society". That might put off some people but I promise you it's not religious propaganda at all, and it has some really funny moments.

Loved that Orville clip, lol. Even the robot was like "wtf". I've got one or two tiny little nitpicks with the writing (male vs masculine, for instance, and the idea of making robots feel pain to control them, rather than, you know, just reprogramming the fucking things if they happen to get too uppity), but I also have the sneaking suspicion that Seth is deliberately going somewhere with those things. And somewhere kind of based, too, given a certain speech a certain dog delivered when he had a redpilled meltdown over a "tweet".

And Hogfather and Gargoyles rock. Damn, I hope the new Ducktales "Disney Furry Universe" figures out a way to bring them in, even if it's a new Clan with no humanish faces (because "superintelligent apes" are dismessed as a silly notion and do not exist in that world.) They've already referenced the Gummis ....

And yeah, the new Ducktales is pretty rock, too, if you don't mind "kiddie stuff" and/or are an old-school fan of Uncle Scrooge comics. And quite frankly, the duel between Scrooge and Goldie is ... a bit steamy. Personally, I find it way better than the original Ducktales, and more like the comic books (with an up-aged and less annoying Webby, and the boys are now actually individuals. Yes, I do think these are big improvements. Yes, I know the comics didn't have her, and she was just stuck in for to grab the "girl" audience, because executives are stupid and think all girls are gay.)

And thanks for the Unsong ref, gonna check that out, but it's Scott Anderson. But I see where the "Adams" came from (likened to HHGttG, and the Dilbert dude). AND CHEESY PUNS! Oh, hell, yeah, colour me Xanth.

Speaking of which, how come no one has deigned to touch Xanth yet?

I saw them live in Atlanta and it was by far the best metal show I went too. It beat out Slayer and Pantera!

It was neat seeing Brandon play the guitar and growl.

They did a full set last year, so it seems AS are being more loose with the rights if Brendon can preform as them again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXa1TFhmnQI&feature=youtu.be

I've also heard a rumor they might get picked up by Hulu for that final season, so we'll see.

Books: Anything by Larry Correia. Monster Hunter (urban fantasy, nothing like the video games) is his main series, but I recommend starting with Hard Magic, book 1 of the Grimnoir Chronicles. Complete trilogy, started after Monster Hunter so it's a better indicator of his writing than book 1 of Monster Hunter. It's an alternate history set in the 1930s where a lot of people have magic. Kind of a noir X-men story. His blog (http://monsterhunternation.com/) is pretty good when he updates it.

Jim Butcher is another great author. The Dresden Files started as modern noir with the detective being a wizard, but has evolved into a bigger scope epic urban fantasy. Start with book 3 (Grave Peril) here and go back to the first 2 once you're hooked on the series, as they're kind of rough in places.

An often-overlooked detective series is Nero Wolfe, by Rex Stout. The guy had the brilliant idea to pair up the armchair detective with the noir detective. So you have a Sam Spade working for a Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock's brother who would be a better detective if he ever went out). First book is Fer-de-Lance, but it doesn't much matter where you start. Also made into a great TV series, but you'll probably have to find that on YouTube.

If you haven't already, read the classics. Treasure Island, Huckleberry Finn, Robin Hood, A Princess of Mars, Ender's Game, Chronicles of Narnia (do not start with The Magician's Nephew, no matter what the stupid publishers say), Lord of the Rings.

On that topic, the YT/podcast Young Heretics is great for covering the big classics like the Odyssey or Plato and how they can inform us about modern day. (Called Heretics because "Screw you, universities, we're reading Homer anyway")

Games: I can't offer much here beyond what's already well known, but check out Snoman Gaming's YT channel to find indie games that are actually good instead of homogenized corporate gruel.

Music: Piano Guys are bloody amazing. Peter Hollens is great acapella. FamilyJules is a good metal guitarist. Puddles Pity Party is a sad clown with a fantastic voice. Postmodern Jukebox plays new songs in older (better) music styles. I've also been listening to a lot of electro swing, which mixes new and old. Here's some examples: Mr. Sandman The Afterbeat Star Wars Cantina band

Or the Pirate Bay. They released it on DVD, looks like the rip still has 5 seeds. (Normally I'd say support the publisher in a case like this but the A&E that made a period detective series ain't the A&E of today.)

I’ve been watching a lot of Jerma985 and Simpleflips lately. I don’t know if gaming streams are your thing but I’m really loving their content and there’s a shitload of it. Ross’s Game Dungeon is another channel I really like.

Show wise I’ve even watching Star Trek Deep Space 9 and it kicks ass. I was never really a Star Trek guy but DS9 is like Deadwood in space, it kicks ass.

You like Anime? Berserk, Goblin Slayer and Trigun are all I can really recommend on that front. I don’t watch much anime but those three shows are fucking awesome, if you like action and cool worlds and shit.

Gaming I’ve mostly been modding the shit out of Fallout and TES lately, along with some kick ass shooters like Doom, Dusk, Blood, Amid Evil... I could go on.

That’s about it off the top of my head.

My holy trinity of TV series is

Banshee, Black Sails, and Spartacus

On the surface Black Sails has progressive messaging but it is somewhat nuanced and the "bad white men" aren't entirely unsympathetic.

Banshee has the best fighting of any TV series ever. And Spartacus is just glorious spectacle made by people who were enjoying themselves and truly loved the genre.

All three have tits and stabbings.

Hearts of Iron 4 with the "The New Order" mod specifically. It's about an alternate Cold War, where Germany won WW2. Before you think it's glorifying - no. The mod turns the whole thing into almost a horror-strategy game with most events told along the lines of characters. Sometimes it will be the people themselves (Nixon, Albert Speer, Göring, etc.) and sometimes you will get the experience of what a Nazi Germany (or a country run by Himmler and the SS) would look like for a normal person or someone that's a slave.

I highly enjoy it and parallels to the present are always.. "fun" to notice. The game will quicker hammer down into your mind that you should never give up because no matter how shitty the situation right now is, there are things that must be prevented or there will be always worse consequences and outcomes.

If dark fantasy appeals to you, I recommend The Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. It's the first book in a trilogy, which is the first of three trilogies. I've enjoyed every book so far. The third trilogy focuses mostly on women and girls, but it miraculously does not pander to feminism.

Books:

Been really digging Mistborn. Tore through the first two books before I got busy again, currently working on the third. It's pulled me into the cult of Brandon Sanderson.

Games: Depends on what you're looking for.

Bands: Big into prog/power metal. Kamelot, Seventh Wonder, Nightwish, Dream Theater, Theocracy, Queensryche to name a few.

Youtubers: Depends what you're looking for, just like with games.

A lot of the media I've consumed recently is either from the past or throwbacks to the past. Maybe that makes me lame and backwards, i don't care. The modern day sucks balls.

Games:

Ghost of Tsushima.

And a lot of retro stuff.
I played through all the Doom games recently.
Right now Im playing Duke Nukem 3d.

Also have a lot of fun with difficult indie stuff with a retro feel.
The Messenger, Katana Zero, and Enter The Gungeon spring to mind.

Books:

A few years back when I got into reading again it started with classic Sci Fi. Especially a lot of Phillip K. Dick.

Eventually that morphed into cyberpunk. Most recently I read William Gibson's Sprawl Trillogy and Snow Crash. Snow Crash is especially fun if you can get over some of the stuff that feels a little cheesy now. Gotta keep in mind when these books were written this stuff was new. They inspired a lot of stuff and when something feels like an overdone cyberpunk/vr trope you gotta view it in the context that these books were the inventors that were later copied.

I can also recommend the first Altered Carbon book. Havent read the others yet.

Music:

I've always loved metal but these days I'm obsessed with Synthwave, Vaporwave, Darksynth, etc. So many awesome artists to recommend here but off the top off my head Gunship, Perturbator, and Carpenter Burt are definitely worth checking out.

Movies:

I've been watching old 80's action and horror movies. And 90's Sci-Fi.

I'm collecting my favorites on dvd/bluray so I have a physical copy when we inevitably get to the point where you can't buy physical media anymore and old media is either edited or dropped from streaming services entirely for offending some loser.

On youtube I'm subbed to so much various stuff, but sticking with the theme of everything else I've listed ... lately I've been getting a lot of nerdy enjoyment out of channels like LGR and Techmoan that take a look at old computers and media players. Certainly not for everyone, but it interests me.
