I have to disagree on her intended demographic. They were definitely meant for people the same age as the main characters, the early teens. And I think the first few worked well as "my first doorstopper." But you're right about her skills as a writer. And unfortunately, a lot of the people obsessed with the series now never branched out into other young adult fiction or moved on to more complex works as they grew up.

I'd argue that it shouldn't have to cover them, as they are more often tools than weapons, but common sense fled "civilization" a long time ago. Maybe they also need protection from the unhinged masses that would rather use their keys to open a box than one of the oldest tools.

I know. Went through it myself during my formative years. Didn't officially make the leap until thirteen years after I first questioned the existence of god. I've described these "atheists" as having a religion shaped hole they try to fill. They still need someone or something providing direction and morals instead of figuring it out for themselves.
