I think you got it backwards. the data reported says only 20% don't trust the media. as reported, 80% of people do trust the media (or at least did not say they don't)
it's the fucking internet. even with all the censorship, it is still the most ruthless and brutally honest forum in the world. if you stand out for any reason, there will be people who hate you, and among them there will be people you say they want to kill you. 99.9% of them are lame ducks.
it didn't used to be this way. In the 10s and 20s they had to explicitly bully scientists into compliance. now academia is so fucked it happens implicitly.
"the media lies" is the first and most important red pill. without it, a person remains forever misinformed.
the reasons might be the same, but the problems are different.
with mass illegal immigration, you are getting mostly very low quality people, which burdens the welfare system and causes crime to spike. the only jobs these people are replacing en mass our jobs that are done under the table anyway.
with a (supposedly) curated import of foreign workers like the H-1B system, you generally get higher quality people, lower rates of crime, and no burden on the welfare system, but jobs and opportunities for native above-table workers are replaced. Since our current system is also pretty bad at gauging the skill of imported workers, you also get lower quality work from them.
it was the peak behind the curtain they thought would never happen. it exposed the rabbit hole that eventually taught us that the media is bought and paid for, and it reaches far beyond entertainment. I'm convinced this was the start of the modern culture war for this generation.
