I'm just confused as to where they stayed the night before the theft. It sounds like they went to a hotel after they parked the moving truck in front of their new house. That's also a rookie mistake.

I'm surprised California can even get U-Hauls. The rates are retarded over there because not enough trucks come in to replace the ones that move out.
They moved to a super sketch part of town. One of the suburbs would have been fine. West End or Woodbury also.
