Scully is the perfect example of a strong likeable woman that modern day writers can't/won't write.

Every episode feels like a movie. It doesn't have "Netflix Lighting"

One of the things I noted on watching it, and remembering the hype during it's original run, was people's love of Fox Mulder. And the thing about Mulder is, he's kind of a dick. I think people soften him in their memories but he's a jerk. I find that a lot of beloved male characters from the past are pretty much jerks. I think it shows people want edgy male characters with some grit to them.
Most notable and lovable men in media are either great father figures with balls of steel or dicks with a heart of gold.
Yeah for like the first two seasons the partnership had an underlying tension that he was this former golden boy turned conspiracy weirdo and she was partly being punished partly there to report on him and run him out of the fbi.
I think it's because deep down we all know that men are kinda supposed to be dicks (hence the name "dick"). Just look at how men bond: we call each other insulting names, we laugh at each other's fuck ups, we hit each other, etc... That's what we do to the people we LIKE.
Dealing with the bullshit necessary to keep society running turns you into a dick.
If you meet a guy who is always pleasant, rest assured he's totally useless otherwise.
Having worked with nothing but men for 30 years in a demanding field, I can confirm. I'll add that there is nothing more suspicious than a new guy acting too fucking nice or kissing up.
Some not all.
iirc they wanted to cast a huge-titty bimbo as Scully, but someone with a brain made the better choice. Reportedly Pamala Anderson was considered.
How could you have forgotten this classic?

It uses time efficiently, a lot of shows have entire episodes with little development. They somehow got consider that longer is better in its own. X-File introduces the issue/villain+ side characters and their motives along with the meat of the episode all within 45ish minutes because every second has meaning.
Late reply but this is my favorite comment
Netflix shows now are made so people can clip them for TikTok
Was it Matt Damon that came out and said Netflix told him to put in dialogue that explicitly stated what was happening because they knew the audience was watching while doing other things like streaming or cleaning?
I saw that. I told my son he needs to get off the tok, he started telling me shit in click bait format. I don't want to hear it in the order that is designed to piss me off!
I don't know if it was him but I've heard that around a lot. Honestly I believe it.
It wasn't just something they said, I watched the movie The Rip, and the characters literally did this.
They awkwardly said, "Hey, what's your relationship like with your brother? Still strained?" after Ben Affleck and Scott Adkins got into a fight and they had to make it clear that they were brothers fighting.
Some of the dialogue in that movie was conspicuously awkward to remind viewers of character relationships and motivations.
I also saw the headlines and shorts on YouTube about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck explaining that Netflix told them to spell out character relationships and plot points and motivations to make it easy for viewers to digest. It really ruined the narrative framing of the movie.
Yeah I forgot what movie I was watching but they repeated the plot multiple times out loud
With now 100% digital filming directors/producers dont feel the need to consider lighting during production, they believe they can just "fix it" in post production. This is why everything looks like crap now
Shitty LCD screens make this ten times worse.
The original X-Files series was one of the best series ever produced in my opinion. I watched that shit since I was a teen on a regular basis, never missed the new episodes and even in my 20’s there was some channel that used to play 2 random rerun episodes every night that I’d always rewatch after getting good and stoned before bed. The writing was spectacular, and yeah, some episodes were cheesy but they were still interesting enough to really capture the audience’s attention.
TV shows and movies were much better back in the 90’s and early 2000’s than any of the crap that’s out there nowadays, but you still have to be careful watching the older stuff, because the woke Jew ideology that’s obvious in all TV shows and movies now, was still riddled throughout entertainment back then, it just wasn’t as in your face as it is now, they slyly snuck it into the underlying messaging without you noticing they were socially engineering your views about certain topics, especially with things like having tolerance for outsiders and fag acceptance, and most importantly, with their anti-White (White guilt) propaganda. Look at Dances with the Wolves and the Last Samurai, both of those movies are essentially the same thing, they’re showing you “a good White man” who is tolerant of non-Whites, who becomes a part of some wholesome non-white society that other White people are trying to destroy, they want you to see Whites as destroyers and to side with non-White culture and people whenever jews try to force something foreign into our culture.
My goodness, you really jumped the shark with your comment about The Last Samuria. It is literally about Japs hiring white guys to help them kill Japs. Nothing about evil white men. The bad guys are Japs.
Is Netflix lighting still common? I don't watch much these days.
Used to watch Netflix on a 1080 TV that had a good auto levels mode, made it so that you could actually see. My 4k doesn't have it, has some sort of auto levels feature, but does not work nearly as well.
Netflix shows and moves have a distinctive "style" to them that is soulless. Probably partly lighting, partly the cameras they choose, the editing style, whatever but its there and a noticeable thing. I honestly have a difficult time giving a crap about any of their movies or shows because of the Netflixification of almost all media. It could also be an over reliance on shitty cg farms too. I think everything has gotten so samey now because they are maximizing efficency. Its the min/maxer effect writ large of the entire media industry. Everything will be beige and gay eventually.
The one thing that bugged me is how she never really had much character development. The shit she encounters on a constant basis and she still somehow treats Mulder like he's a conspiracy nutjob.
What I mainly remember is that neither one of them could shoot worth shit.
I mean, based of average FBI shooting scenarios... that's actually realistic.
LOL
I'm mid rewatch and I'm definitely impressed at the production values. There are some really good set pieces and great camera work.
There are a handful of episodes I would consider genuine masterpieces of television.
The first time I watched it was when I had a roommate. Every now and then after an episode ended we would look at each other in amazement
I rewatches that with my kids a few years ago. We don't interest in the exact same spot. Here's a throwback.
