I've heard good things of the movie, and some based comments the director made, so I might go to watch it, but I want to know if it's clear beforehand. Anyone who has watched it can confirm or deny it?

I mean, the whole story is the world is coming together to save the planet. So, there is a Utopic UN level of diversity whenever there is more than one person on the screen. The leader of the project is a woman. White male lead is the only character with discernable flaws.
That's about all I can come up with having seen it recently and I had to really stretch to come up with even that. I'd have an easier time reading more based themes into it than negative ones. It was surprisingly absent (or I've gotten dull in my old age).
That's Weir for you. The way the project involves the lead character is morally onerous. He usually hands those roles to women.
If you look at The Martian, the whole story wouldn't happen, unless the flawed judgement of a female commander was involved.
The Martian was basically all of diversity incorporated coming together to save a white astronaut bro from being marooned on Mars. The propaganda angle being that 'diversity is a good thing!'
The movie cuts out the whole "travelling across the surface of Mars" portion of the book down to nothing. He dedicates a lot of time to that during which Watney is almost entirely on his own for survival and nearly dies a few times before reaching the Ares.
The LEGO movie is more apt for the message it tries to give :)
Lego Movie Director found dead in an alley.
Directors, the same two also directed Project Hail Mary.
And they spent the entirety of the second movie rebuking any decent message of the first. Ala Joker.
Everything was not awesome.
Not really. The Lego Movie has an ultra-competent girlboss outshining the lead character in martial prowess and other stuff.
I've seen someone try to argue that there's a "Care more about the outgroup than your own kind" message baked in. Can't really explain why without spoiling some of the more emotional moments of the film that you really need to go in blind for.
All I can say is that it's hard to argue against the true friendship and self sacrifice presented on both sides of the relationship.
I've read the book. While a woman may have been "in charge" of dealing with the astrophage, she did not act like one. I don't know how her story will translate on screen, as I haven't seen it yet, but there was no group consensus seeking with that woman, she made decisions and ran over anyone and everyone who got in her way.
That's because Andy Weir is really terrible at writing characters. Project Hail Mary is essentially just The Martian with a different coat of paint. The main character is Mark Watney, the alien is rocky Mark Watney and in the flashback every character that isn't just another Mark Watney is a racial caricature without any depth. Like the Russian who speaks with a Russian accent and likes to drink vodka. Seriously. That's all there is to the character.
I still enjoyed the book but yeah... it's The Martian 2.
The story has the veneer of hard science but it's mostly a cookie cutter emotional ride full of highs and lows. Perhaps the book is better, but probably not.
The lead is a down-on-his-luck 'put upon' male character who gets eased into the comfort zone of the audience by downplaying his intelligence and making him self-effacing and humble.
The entire movie is tailored to be as audience-friendly as possible. It was amusing enough and has fisting jokes, which were funny.
Woke elements:
The main character is more or less a stand-in for the white man in Western society?
Mostly the same crew as "The Martian" and produced by Gosling himself.
So.. probably not terrible..
I've heard some interrupt the ending as an endorsement of white replacement.
Amazing movie except for the small amount of UN propaganda before he leaves earth
I have no idea how much straw grasping is going in this Fucking shithole of forum. But yes its got no dei shit on it. Ffs most of the movie is ryan gosling with an autistic rock spider.
