I've heard good things of the movie, and some based comments the director made, so I might go to watch it, but I want to know if it's clear beforehand. Anyone who has watched it can confirm or deny it?

That's Weir for you. The way the project involves the lead character is morally onerous. He usually hands those roles to women.
If you look at The Martian, the whole story wouldn't happen, unless the flawed judgement of a female commander was involved.
The Martian was basically all of diversity incorporated coming together to save a white astronaut bro from being marooned on Mars. The propaganda angle being that 'diversity is a good thing!'
The movie cuts out the whole "travelling across the surface of Mars" portion of the book down to nothing. He dedicates a lot of time to that during which Watney is almost entirely on his own for survival and nearly dies a few times before reaching the Ares.
